T. HICKEY'S CREW WINS SATURDAY'S TRIAL FOURS

The Opotiki Rowing Club was favoured with good conditions for its trial fours held on Saturday. Crews drew as f ollows: C. Debreceny (cox), B. O. Mansell (str); L. V. Smith (3), J. B. McGuire (2), L. Clark (1). D. Pipe (cox), T. Hickey (str.), V. Mulhern (3), H. Burgess (2), J. Pipe (1). D. Pipe (cox), W. Aidney (str.),JL S. Kelly (3), J. Keller (2), T. Keller (1). Debreceny (cox), P. J. Fox (str.), J. onner (3), T. Hill (2), B. Aidney (1). D. Pipe (cox), T. Selwyn (str), B. Mulhern (3), A. Jephson (2), B. Wolfenden (1). First Race, Mansell v. Hickey: Mansell made a better start but Hickey soon passed and at the wharf (the finishing post) there was a length of clear water between the two. Second race, W. Aidney V. P. J. Fox. Fox was well away on the start, and at the Club sheds, had two clear lengths lead. Aidney set to well, but could not make up the leeway, Fox winning by a clear length. Third Race: T. Hickey v. T. Selwyn: Halfway down the course, Selwyn was leading, but broke a footplate and the race was rowed again after repairs. On the second start Selwyn was three quarters of .a length behind at the club shed but spurted and drew level. Hickey, however, drew away to win by a canvas. Final: T. Hickey v. P. J. Fox: Both had a good start, Hickey being slightly in( the lead when th'e oars fouled, and another start was made. Again however, both coxes tried for the middle of the river and another foul resulted. The third start was good, Hickey leading slightly, and he maintained his advantage to win by a can>.vas of clear water. The trophies were badges, paid for by entry fee, as the club has no presented trophies.
