BAY OF PLENTY CONTESTS > COMMENCE NEXT WEEK. (Notes by "Forehand.") Misfortune followed a team of Rotorua Tennis Club players who were in- jvited to play the Mamaku players at . Mamaku during the week-end. A side composed of both ladies and men made the trip, but after the playing of 'a couple of games heavy rain set in and necessitated an abandonment of further matehes. It is the intention of the club .to.make the trip. again this : week-end, and an enjoyahle series * of games is anticipated; The entertaining ability of members of the country club are well known and are much appreciated by visitors. " * * » * Since last week's notes, a furtber increase has taken place in the menihership of the Rotorua Clubt and all members are getting into- practice in preparation for forthcoming tournaments. The courts are playing well and are quickly becoming very fast. * * * * Much disappointment is felt by meiiibers in the action of the Tourist Department regarding Sunday play, and the ref usal to make the courts availabb on Sunday s until next month. The reason for this decision is not clear to the writer, unless it b$ the wearing of the turf and if this he the reason, the extra damage which would be caused by two or three extra days' play appears to be very small indeed compared with the increased standand which would follow the facilities for moi'e practice. * * * * The first round of matehes for the Dunlop Shield and Watt Cup competitions under the auspices of the Bay of Plenty Lawn Tennis Association will be played on Saturday week. The draw, which was announeed last week, prpvides. for th'e playing, of the Te Puke versus Rotorua Club's Dunlop Shield matehes on the Governmeht Gardens courts, and for the B grade trophy, Rotorua players will play the Ngongotaha! Club at Ngongotaha. * * * * American Team. The tennis world will learn with' regret that the visit of the American lawn tennis team to New Zealand is | again in a state of uncertainty, and that no one locally knows just what is goingj to happen. There ap-pears to have been some misunderstanding between the American team and the Australian Lawn Tennis Association on the subject of the terms of the tour, but whether this is at the back of the new developments it is^ impossible to say with the information now available here. , In any case the Australians have been asked to curtail their tour by a week and New Zealand by three weeks. This means that instead - of thg Dominion having the Americans for a month they will he available for only seven days. Thus not more than two matehes would be possible. Position of Vines. In addition there appears to be some uncertainty about Ellsworth Vines It is not a question of the rest of "the team coming without Vines, for the players are travelling as a unit and this country will see all or none. Ap- ! parently , Vines must return to the United States by a certain date ahd this seems to be the reason for the hurried rearrangements which must be made. Australia, which has brought out the team, is willing to sacrifice as little of its thne as possible, ,and New Zealand H thus left in the unsatisfactory position that she has occupied so oiten when acting in concert with the larger organisation. Naturally, the ch'anged arrangements make new financial agreements necessary, and negotiations about there are now in progress. Provided, that the Commonwealth body is at all reasonahle the Americans shQuid come here, but it looks now as if it will he a purely North Island visit. -
