R'URAL DEPUTATION MR. FORBES SAYS NO PISTOL HELD AT HEAD OF GOVERNMENTNO PROMISES GIVEN.
Wellington, Thursday. Inquiries this afternoon have established that although the Prime Minister undertook last night to consider sympathetically all points raised hy the dsputation which waited on .Cabinet advocating high exchange, he gave no promise with respect to any particular alternative advanced. He expressed the personal opinion that the matter of the exchange was one entirely for the banks. He also intimated that he was rparsonally opposed to the principle of the payment of bonus on production. Any suggestion that country members had held a pistol at the head of the Government was denied hy Mr. Forbes this afternoon. "They expressed the desire to discuss the- position hut they made it elear they did not wish to emhaiTass the Government recognising that the Government has enough worries already," said Mr. Forbes. He added that the conference was of a friendly nature and that the discussion concerning the alternatives put for ward was temperate. It is elear that th? movement had its origin in the Reform seetion of the coalition. Members prominently assoeiated in the leadership of the movement were Messrs. H. M. Campbell (Hawke's Bav), K. S. Williams (Bay of Plenty), Hon. A. D. McLeod (Wairarapa), and C. II. Clinkavd (Ro'orua), the two last named being the speakers eleetcd by the deputation. In the House of Representatives this afternoon, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. II. E, Ilolland asked the Prime Minisver if his attentioa had heen drawn to newspaper r . sports regarding the deputation of members and if he would state the policy of the Government in refcrence to th • matters raised. "The Leader of the Opposition has evidently regained confidence in aceuracy of newspa])':r reports," rcplied the Prime Minister, "I suggest that he plaee his question on the order paper so that I too may have the opportunity of reading the report," (laughter).
