GENERAL WORKS BUSINESS BEFORE WEDNESDAY f NIGHTS MEETINGS QF COUNCIL. HAWKERS' LICENSES. The following general business was dealt with by the Rotorua Borough Council at its meeting on Wednesday evening:— . Mr. R. H. Sparkes asked for a de-finition-of perishable goods as applied to a hawker's license. He said he h'ad been informed that cakes and soft drinks were not perish'able goods and that he would be required to pay £1 for a license. On the motion of Cr. 0. H. Coleman it was decided to refer the matter to the general committee with a recommendation that the fee be reduced to 10s. Landscape Architect. An application by Mr. A.. Brett for the position of landscape architect rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. P. Tschopp was referred to the reserves committee. Second-hand Dealer's License. Mrs. M. E. Tuck was granted a se-cond-hand dealers' license. Fenton Stneet.

The Rotorua Ratepayers' Association suggested that Fenton Street he tidied >up before the holidays, as the present unkempt appearance was not likely favourahly .to impress visitors. The! filling in of the depression near the racecouse gate was also overdue. The matter was referred to the wo'rks committee and the association is to be informed that the road is always tidied up before Christmas. Repairs Needed. An application for repairs to Tutanekai Street in front of his shop was made by Mr. G. M. Graeff and the request was referred to the works committee. Survey Plan. At the request of the Tourist Department, a survey plan of the area to be . taken off Kuirau Reserve to widen the corner of Lake Road and Ranolf Street was agreed to. Cycle Track. A formal res oluti on was passed declaring the track constructed on the north side of - ererika St., a cycle track for the use of cyclists only. Kacecourse Frontage. In view of the fact that the Rotorua Racing Club proposed to subdivide section 24 on the Fenton Road frontage, a suggestion was made that the council agree to a lower level road, provided the club undertakes to contrihute toward the cost of the disposal of storm water. After discussion it was decided that the whole council inspect the part of the road referred to and that the engineer get out an estimate of the quanity of filling required. Malfroy Road Path. The works committee reported having authorised the engineer to proceed with the footpath work in Malfroy ' Road, provided thehvork is carried ont to permanent levels. Cr. 0. H. Coleman urged that they were making paths to vacant sections, but Cr. Johnson pointed out that the council had already authorised the work and in this he was supported by the Mayor. Cr. W. Galbraith thought the ratepayers should be consulted if- it was proposed to work to definite permanent levels. Cr. Johnson said that the works committee was consulting owners when the level pegs were put in. Golf Links Frontage. The works committee recommended the employment of relief workers on clearing the Sophia and Fenton St. frontages to the golf links and this was agreed to. Building Permits. Since last meeting building permits were issued to the value of £3311. Gift of Books. A vote of thanks waaf extended to Mr. F. Tschopp for a gift of hooks for the library. Check on Tools. Owing to the fact that a considerable quantity of tools is being. purchased it was decided to institute a check each day by gangers and that wheelbarrows be cjiained together each night. Drainage Connections. Fourteen residences have not yet been connected in the high level area and the owners have been notified that immediate action must he taken to prevent prosecution. Need for Care. In discussing the statement of accounts for the last seven months, the Mayor impressed upon all eommittees the necessity for keeping a strict watch on expenditure, otherwise the council might end the year in an unfavourable position. He pointed out thatfhere was always the danger that the estimated revenue might not be realisea and care was essential.
