judge welcomed PICTURESQUE INCIDENT AT . NATIVE LAND COURT
(From
There was'an unusual but picturesque ineident at the opening of the Native Land Court at Opotiki on Wednesday, the newly appointed judge, Mr. W. H. Bowler, presiding. Immediately the court was opened, an aged and venerable Maori, Tu j Rakuraku, the paramount chief of I the Tuhoe tribes rose to his feet and commenced an impassioned and lengthy speech of welcome in Maori which apparently waxed more and more exciting judging by the expression in the speaker's voice and at last the crowd of Maori men and women at the back of the court could no longer eontain themselves and with stamping feet and clapping hands they roared "Komate! komate!" Judge Bowler, in replying through the interpreter, said, "I must thank Tu Rakuraku and my old friends for such a greeting. This greeting shows 1 that I am not a stranger to you and I trust that our associations in the future will be as happy as they have been in the past."
