I STRONG PROTEST AGAINST ATT1TUDE TOWARDS ; commissioner PRiVILEGE CASES

Wellington, Tuesday. At a crawded and representative meeting of Wellington citizens and business men, held this afternoon, the : following resolutions were unanimously and 'enthusiastically passed: — "This xneeting desires to record its • deep appreciation of Mr. A. Macintosh's services to the Dominion in the past and its full appreciation of the part he has taken as a member of the National Expenditure Commission, and deplores the attacks made on a devoted, loyal, intrepid and intelligent I citizen. • | "In the opinion of this meeting menx- | hers of a Royal Commission are en- : titled, within the scop'e of their official duties, to exactly the same protection as judges and magistrates. It deeply deplores the violation of this fundamental principle by the proceedings taken by the House of Representatives against Mr. Macintosh. It heartily congratulates him on his resolute refusal to answer questions put j to him hy the select committee rei garding the reasons for his addendunx j to the x-eport of the National Expen- } diture Commission and the coxxfiden- | tial evidence on which it was based, and the meeting respectfully points out to the Government and the House of Representatives that unless the immunity hitkferto , enjoyed hy Royal Commissioners from interferenee of this kind is restored the diffieulty of securing the services of men who will handle contentious issues with the coux-age and thoroughness displayed by Mr. Macintosh and his colleagues will he greatly increased."
