RIVER BOARD CLERK SENTEN'CED TO IMPKISQNMENT

Auckland, Tuesday. Having pleaded guilty to a charge 1 of stealing £27 5s 6d, the property I of the Waiohine River Board, Thomas J Wade Watson, aged 4-4 years, former secretary of the board, appeared for j sentence before Mr. W. R. McKean, j S.M., in the Police Court. i The offences were committed in ! Greytown, Wellington province, where the board had its office between Deeember 18, 1930 and August 4, 1931. When the case was heard on Monday, it was stated that accused left Greytown suddenly in August, 1931, and after his departure, it was revealed by Government audit of the, board's accounts that there were de■falcations amounting to £22. "There is very little that can Ibe said in your favour, and there is not the slightest prospect of your making restitution. I have confexrred with the probation officer about you, and I think you should serye a short term of imprisonment of six weeks." • said the Magistrate in passing sentence.
