SATURDAY'S SERIES

HIGH SCHOOL A SCORE WELL AGAINST CITY HAMPSON BATS FREELY The High School A and City cricket teams commenced their match on Saturday last on No. 1 ground at the High School. Hinton won the toss for school and opened the innings with Dawson, to the bowling of Reed and Godsalve. Both batsmen were at home to Reed, but Godsalve occasionally troubled Dawson, his leg breaks having the batsman puzzled. With the total at 41, Dawson fell to Godsalve, being caught by Alexander at square leg. Hinton was unfortunate in being given out lbw to Bowden with his total at 22. Beale's weakness in feeling for off balls resulted in his dismissal when Mason held a catch behind the wickets. Higgins made 17 in good style, before hitting an easy catch to Hewson at mid-off. Alexander was run out as the result of a smart piece of fielding by Hewson and five wickets were down for 88. Hampson and Brooker then became associated and by careful play took the score to 130 before Brooker was taken in the slips by Alexander off Godsalve. Matthews was well caught by Harris, who was fielding substitute for City at square leg and then began the best partnership Of the innings. Both Hampson and Burghan were very confident, the latter particularly making many fine shots on the leg side, while Hampson exploited his cover drive to great advantage. The fielding had slackened by this time and runs came at a fast rate. Eventually Mulligan was given a turn with the ball and succeeded in bowling Burghan in his third over. The retiring batsman had played a delightful innings putting great power into his shots for one of his size and playing all the bowling with the utmost confidence. Devin filled the vacancy and was content to hold his wicket intact while Hampson sent the score along. He was run out after assisting to add 40 for the ninth wicket. Hampson was now approaching his century and Clark endeavoured to give him the bowling. However, with the score at 273 Clark was caught by Mulligan off Harding and stumps were drawn for the day with Hampson, 97 not out. Details : — High School A — First Innings N.
