SALOON VISIBILITY

Protests from a number of drivers that the fashionahle lines of modern saloons are not conducive to^ease of driving in the hands of the inexpert owing to the difl&eulty of seeing the wings are mentioned in a leading article in reeent issue of the Motor. "On the other hand," this article continues, "if -manufacturers reverted to the type of hodywork popular five or six years ago perched high above the wheels. there would be little or no sale for such cars. No manufaeturer can afford to ignore popular demand. "We have heen examining a number of cars from the driving seat of ' which it, is not, possible to see the 'near-side front wing. In all cases [ this appears to he due to attempting to obtain a low appearance with hodywork necessarily mounted high ahove the ground owing to the h'eight of the frame members. "In other caffe the low build of the chassis has enabled the overall height of the hodywork to he redueed while at the same time affording excellent visihility with ample headroom. Thus is th'e only way in which a low overall height can be maintained, for the attempt to provide a low appearance by raising the waistline and narrowing the outlook through the screen and windows is the cause of the complaints. "The remedy seems fairly ohvious, and undoubtedly there are :a number of cars the chassis of which reqpire , redesigning so as to «he in h'armony with modern low-huilt and rakish lines." ;
