-By Telegraph— Copyrlght)

New Plymouth, Monday The trial of Hubert Cedric Jepson, charged with the murder of his wife and two children at New Plymouth on September . 15, opened in the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Reed. The victims of the tragedy were Lilian Violet Jepson, aged 37 years, Johri Robert Jepson, 18 months; and Richard Cedric Jepson, 12 years. • Mr. R. H. Quilliam, the Crown Prosecutor, with Mr. G. Macallum, appeared for the Crown, and Mr. J". H. Sheat, with Mr. A. IC. North, for the defence. At the Lower Court proceedings the Crown called five witnesses, but it is understood that there will be a considerably longer list of witnesses for the defence and probably further evidence for the Crown in rebuttal of the evidence on behalf of accused. Mr. Quilliam, in a brief address, reviewed the facts as disclosed in thp Lower Court, describing the finding of "the bodies and accused's pemarks to police officers. He said he would not attempt to anticipate- the evidence for the defence. The defence was an admission of the crime but a denial of guilt op the ground of insanity, which counsel said he was cdnfideiit of proving.
