saturday's matches ALBION AND OLD BOYS IN LEADING POSITIONS SPEDDING'S GOOD KNOCK Moderate totals were the order in the second series of cricket matches in the McLean Cup competitions on Saturday after'noon. Playing for Old Boys Spedding put up the best performance of the day in scoring an undefeated 99 runs against High School B. In the same match Harwood followed up a good score of 40 runs by taking, seven wickets for 46 runs for the; High School side. At the High School ground Albion were in a strong position against Ngongotaha at stumps after compiling a score of 158. But for one run Spedding's total was equalled by Hampson of High School A, who scored 98 not out in a total of 290. Old Boys Ahead At the conclusion of the day's play Old Boys were in a strong position against High School B and held a lead of 51 runs on the first innings- The match was played on the Government Grounds, High School batting first. Harwood and Ewert opened, but the latter was out for a single when the total was six and Egdell took his place. The ne'wcomer did not do much better, being caught by Matthews off Heley when three, but Harwood was continuing soundly and kept the scoring rate moving. Harwood and Haycock became associated and added 31 runs for the third wicket, but after both had gone the Old Boys' bowling was generally on top and wickets fell quickly. The outgoing batsmen, Harwood (40), and Haycock (23) had batted attractively. Going in ninth wicket, Buchan treated the bowling lightly and dispatched each scoring shot, to the boundary and was undefeated when his partner, Carter, who had compiled a valuable 11 runs, was bowled by Spedding. In aecordance with the rules of the competition, High School B team bat twelve men. Old Boys opened with Spedding and Heley and both immediately played the bowling confidently and added 59 runs for the first wicket, Heley being out leg before to Harwood for 17. Matthews joined Spedding, but the next wicket fell with 12 added, and Lawrence took his place. After sccring 18 runs and assisting Spedding to add 49 for the third wicket Lawrence was caught off Harwood by Haycock and two further wickets fell with little alteration in the total. Spedding was approaching his century and had a possibdity of getting it when he foolishly wTused a call from Neeson, resulting in the latter, who was shaping confidently being run out. With one run requirel for Spedding's century, the last man, Sherriff skied one to Lgdell off Ha*wood and the innings ch sed for 160 runs. In scoring his total of 99 runs, not out, Spedding had played freely with shots all round the wicket. Ngongotaha v. Albion With six wickets down for 86 runs, Ngongotaha were in difficulties when stumps were drawn after the first day's play against Albion. Albion batted first and compiled 158 runs, Hinton (20) and Burton (37), giving the side a good start. Wallis, MeGill and Sutherland failed, but Gresham with 24 runs and Marshall (36), playing his first game for the club, both batted quietly, but well. Opening with a sixer off Harris Lenihan made a handy baker's dozen before being bowled by Beaumont and Penno carried his bat for 10 runs. Harris and D. Hanson opened for Ngongotaha to the bowling of Sutherland and Lenihan, but the former was not comfortable to the fast bowler and after scoring a two, skied one to Targett. Hanson was playing Lenihan freely, but had his wicket shatter ed by Wallis in this bowler's firstover.
Dawson quietly collected runs and with Blomfield added a valuable fifth wicket partnership. With 28 runs to his credit the latter batsman lost his wicket t9 Sutherland. When stumps were drawn for the day Dawson was the not out batsman with a total of 37 runs. The wickets were equally shared between Sutherland and Wallis, who each captured three apiece- .
