CONCENTRATE'S RECORD TIME IN METROPOLITAN HANDICAP CUP TO SILVER SCORN
Christchurch, Saturday. . Excellent .racing was the order for the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Summer Carnival at Riccarton to-day. During the day £24,859 -was put through the totalisator as against £31,125 for the corresponding day last .year. The total for the carnival was £86,579 10s against £109,886 10s last year, a decrease of £23,•307. Win For Juniper Juniper (£437) was the favourite in the opening event, the Suburban Handicap with Morepork (£385) next. Subdivision took the lead early with Juniper, Elude, Riri, Punchestown, Morena and Morepork following closely. Coming into the straight Juniper overhauled Subdivision and staved off a challenge from Gold Bag to win by two lengths, with Pixie Gold third three lengths away- Gold Bag paid a big dividend for second place. A well merited win by High Tor • in the Seymour Handicap gave ownertrainer R. Longley his first success for some time. Idolise shot to the front from the barrier and Huia Belle, Grand Review, Gold Cross, Ian's March and Craigavon were strung out behind, High Tor and Pleeting Glance being well back. High Tor gained rapidly in the straight followed by Fleeting Glance and passing the post this pair were in the same order with Craigavon third, three lengths away. Next were Huia Belle, Grand Cross, Grand Review and Ian's March. Argentic Again Scoring his third win in the same number of starts, Argentic won the Cressy Handicap, being second favourite to La Poupee. Fair Weather shot ahead from the barrier followed by La Poupee and Adelphi. At the half mile post Adelphi had charge from Hurlingham, La Poupee, Fair Weather, Tippling and Metal Bird, with Argentic second to last. Argentic put in a great run in the straight and won from Hurlingham by two lengths with La Poupee a head away third. The next in order were Metal Bird, Adelphi, Tippling and ' Fair Weather. Counter Play was left at the start of the Pioneer Handicap, Grouse and Cheap Money showing up prior to Sweet Agnes taking charge. Putting in a strong challenge Guarantee pressed Sweet Agnes over the last one and a-half furlongs and won by a neck after a strenuous tustle. Grouse was three lengths away third and next past the post was Cheap Money-
Record Broken A Riccarton course record of 2.30 1-5, for one and a-half miles was set up by Concentrate in the Metropolitan Handicap. A good start saw Arikira away first, but Shatter took charge out of the straight from Red Racer who, however, was ahead at the mile and a-quarter post followed by Shatter, Arikira, Red Sun, Minerval, Red Heckle, Concentrate and Historic. At the six furlong post the order was practically unehanged with the exception that Concentrate had begun to move up and was sixth into the straight. Putting in a strong challenge to Red Heckle who hung on gallantly, Concentrate won by a length, Shatter being third three lengths away from Red Heckle, and Historic fourth. Red Sun and Minerval followed in that order. Concentrate's record is 74 starts, 11 wins, 11 seconds and 15 thirds. His total stake winnings are £10,459. Canterbury Cup Only two horses, Fast Passage and Silver Scorn were in the Canterbury Cup, the latter gaining her seventh win. During the greater part of the race, Fast Passage made the running and on entering the straight was about a length in front. Here Eastwood called on Silver Scorn who won comfortably by a length in the good time of 2.4. A good win was secured by Berate in the Stonyhurst Handicap, the rider again being Eastwood. Until the straight was reached Grampian and Lady Zephyr called the tune followed by Berate and Rocket, but here Berate put in her claim and won at a fast pace from Tout le Mond by a length with Silver Sight a similar dis- ; tance away third- Rocket and Sham- j fight were next to finish. The winner was favourjite with £825, and Tout le Mond carried £372. Members to Outsider The seventh favourite, The Quorn , (£503) won the Members' Handicap after leading the entire distance by a length from Korokio. Cricket Bat who was favourite with £1017 and was second most of the distance, dropped into third position half ahead behind Korokio and a head in front of Merry Peel. Korokio carried £994.
