Upsetting scenes were witnessed when women attempted to save children from drowning. • Many bodies were swept inland and have* not been found. Others were swept to sea. Some of the survivors co'mmitted suicide after seeing their wives and' children swept away. ' The authorities are not atte'mpting to retain the bodies for identification, but are burning them in great pyres. Some 40 per cent. of the Cuban sugar crop has been destroyed 'and great stores have also been demolished.
