WHANGAREI RACES

FORM ANTICIP ATION S FOR VARfiJUS EVENTS Last season the Whangarei Racing Club held its spring meeting only, the usual autumn fixture being abandoned in view of the state of affairs financially. The time has now come round for the spring meeting again, and with the club's offer to put on a special train for horses, the club p-aying all costs of th'e horse special, it has attracted nice even fields for its meeting, which opens to-day. The principal event is the Whangarei Cup, which has.1 drawn a field of ten, so that if they all go to the post it will prove an interesting race. King's Archer holds pride of place, and as he raced prominently at Ellerslie last week-end he ought to be in th'e limelight if his weight does not prove prohibitive. Royal Artist is scarcely likely to make the trip after the raise consequent on his Mitchelson Cup success. Bronze Tray won the Avondale Cup really well, without the semblanee of a. flnke.

May Repeat This Win. In that event Bronze Tray was last into the straight, and he came home very strongly --.to win on his merits. He is well treated in this company. Grand Tea is the mudlark of the field, and Alloy is a good performer judged by far northern standards. Flying Prince is not an everyday sort, although if he is in the mood he will be in the money. Teels is a likely hack engaged. while Gay Idea has been noticed finishing on in fair class in her latest efforts. Bronze Tray stands out in this field, with Flying Prince, King's Archer and Gay Idea possibilities. A very even field is engaged in the sprint, the Manaia Handicap. T'ea Chat has earned the reputation of being very unreliable, and Hampton Park, too, does not always give of his best. Still the class will suit the latter admirably. Immamint was under a cloud last week and coulujf not race. at Ellerslie; if started here she will have a chance. Jalldy Karo and Karangapai usually require a little longer journey, but can be considered as possibilities with their light im■posts. ' Likely Lightweights. Arch Ruler, too, may go better over seven furlongs, _ but Royal Gallant, if reserved for this, has the necessary pace to qualify him. Exaggeration beat all but Golden Wings last week at Ellerslie and that form reads best, for she apparently goes best under a light weight. The best quartette would appear to be Exaggeeration, Hampton Park, Immamint and Karangapai, with a strong preference for the two first named. Royal Gallant is a useful galloper in the hack .class and he ought to do well at the meeting, with Delrain and Currajong also possibilities. The speedy Lord Aintree is another well I placed, and the ex-Gisborne hack • Prince Golosuus, now at Takanini, is a good looking sort. Black Marlin may be best of those in th'e race for local horses, while Whakapara and Jalldy Karo look very good in the Parahaki Handicap. If Prince of Orange goes north for the Ilurdles his uprice will he short, . for he was brilliant at Ellerslie. Lord Aintre'e i looks another that can be referred to as a "best bet." The form horses engaged are the following: — 12.20, Spring Plate.— Eldora, Echo Song, Sister Em. 1.0, Hikurangi Hack.— Royal Gallant, . . Delrain, Currajong. 1 1.45, Huanui Hurdles. — Prince of Orange, if absent, Patutahi, Sleepy ibol, Arch Eagle. 2.30, Whangarei Cup. — Bronze Tray, King's Archer, Flying Prince. 3.10, ^ County Handicap.— Black Marlin, British Columbia, Hoihoma. 3-50, Kensington Hack.— Lord Aintree, Prince Colossus, Princess Star. 4.30, Manaia Handicajp.— Exaggeration, Hampton Park, Royal Gallant. 5.10, Parahaki Handicap.— Whakapara, Jalldy Kar 0;, Gay Idea. Royal Artist is an uneertain starter, while Prince of Orange may not make the trip.
