FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
HALDANE
COOK.
, (To the Editor) . Sir, — I was amazed to read that some men had been urging the- Government to allow them to import livestock from Britain, where the dreaded foot and mouth disease flourishes. Fortunately for us, the Government is alive to the almost unbelievable loss'the disease causes in rural areas and refused permission. Anyone who has not fully realised the fear this disease causes in unaffected areas near those on which the stock is diseased has only to look' at the Sphere of September 17 and see cart wheels being sprayed as the cart goes from the affected area to another county. In California, U.S.A., where the disease is prevalent, the wheels of motor cars, etc., have to be driven through a liquid mixture and passengers walk through it before they are allowed to enter another state. Everyone in town and country should back up our Government and see that there is absolute prohibition against allowing stock to come here from a diseased country, no- matter what precautions are taken. — I am, etc.
