GIRLS CLIFF FALL
TWO HOURS WITH BROKEN LEG While walking along the dangerous 500ft high cliff path leading to White Pebble Beach, Miss Gladys Gotch, 25, of Haldane Road, London, stumbled and fell to a ledge below. Her mother, an elderly woman, saw her plight from a distance and made frantic but unavailing efforts to reach her. She ascertained that the girl was badly hurt, and she then scrambled back along the path to Ilfracombe, two miles away, to fetch help and an ambulance. She was exhausted when she arrived. Ambulance men were unable to reach Miss Gotch, but an invalid chair was brought as near as possible, while a local cliff-climber descended to where she lay. He found her in great pain with a fractured leg and brought her to the top. Sbe had spent two jiours on the ledge awaiting rescue. She was then taken to hospital and detained.
