AUCKLAND MEETING

RECORD TIMES IN WELCOME STAKES & MITCHELSON CUP ■ ROYAL ARTIST'S VICTORY Auckland, Saturday. Fine but windy weather prevailed to-day for the opening of the spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie, and there was a good attendance, The course was in the best. of order and fast times were recorded, the Mitchelson Cup and Welcome Stakes times Deing records for these particular races. The Welcome Stakes was run in the phenom'enal time of 58 4-5sec, and it is believed this is the first time that the minute has been broken at Ellerslie for five furlongs. The downfall of Pillow Fight was a blow to his admirers. It transpired that on the eve of the meeting, the Night Raid gelding had a bad leg and that there was a chance of him not being started. He did not move freely in the race and with three furlongs gone he was conoeding the pacemaker about ten length's start. However, as Gold Trail was another four lengths farther back at that stage it certainly looks as if all the honours should go to the filly. It was a very impressive performance on the part of Gold Trail, for she was not only able to make up her big lesway but she was going away at the finish. The totalisator handled £25,9091, comp^red with £28,815 for the same day last yeaa% a decrease of £2905S.

Fine Novice Hurdler ! Prince of Orange, at a fine price, won the Trial Hurdles very easily, this being his first appearance over the battens. He was in front to the first fence and was never headed. Sleepy Sol went with him in the early stages but only lasted for about a mile. Five furlongs from home Patutahi ran up to Prince of Orange and they turned for home four lengths ahead of Sub-Editor, with Slump and Town Beauty at good intervals. Thetwo leaders took the last fence together and thereafter Patutahi weakened, Prince of Orange winning by four lengths, with Sub-Editor two lengths back fourth. Next to finish well back were Sleepy Sol, Town Beauty, Carlaris and Cargen, with Trowbridge a long way off last. Prince of Orange will win again, taking his brilliant effort on Saturday as a criterion. Camie From the Clouds It was with a great run over the last couple of furlongs that Gold Trail won the Great Northern Guineas, and her success was too emphatic to be of the fluky type. Of course Pillow Fight was a hot favourite, but he was a bit sore before the race, and it was only his gameness that enabled his backers to collect a little from the wreek. Tea Trader was the pacemaker early, and when they had settled down he was clear of Midinette and Jonathan, with Prolyxo handy, Greelc Gold, Senorita and Pillow Fight bunched several lengths clear of Gold Trail, and Aesculus a bad last. This was the order at the end of three furlongs, but Tea Trader was still the leader at the home turn from Jonathan, Midinette and Pillow Fight, with Gold Trail still second to last. While Pillow Fight, Midinette, Tea Trader and Jonathan were in line a furlong from home Gold Trail came with a phenomenal burst of speed, caught the leaders, and won easily by two and a half lengths. Pillow Fight was a head in front of Tea Trader and Senorita, with Jonathan right up and Midinette, Prolyxo and Greek Gold next and Aesculus last. For a hack Senorita ran a wonderful race. Won All The Way Golden Wings, the favourite, was first out in the Shorts Handicap and was first home. He was always clear after settling down. Exaggeration Tradesman, Tetrarchate and Gold Day being bunched and Huntingdon! lying last. There was no change to the turn and Golden Wings went on to win by a clear length from Exaggeration, with High Comedy three lengths away a head in front of Gold Day, Tradesman, Huntingdon and Tetrarchate.Persham was pulled up in the straight and stopped dead. Huntingdon raced very badly, but Exaggeration made a great showing. However it was not a good field. A Tight Finish A thrilling finish was provided in the Mitchelson Cup, Royal Artist getting a close decision over Great Emblem and View Halloo. The latter was a good priced favourite, with the tw? dividend payers at nice prices. Lord Val and Flying Prince got the worst of the start, View Halloo and Motere being the first to show up, and then Thespis took up the running. However, going out of the straight View Halloo and Motere were taken to the front and they were clear of the field right to the home turn. Here Gay Cockade flashed up on the outside, Great Emblem. and Lord Val being there too and Royal Artist putting in a run on the bend to obtain a fine position on the rails in sixth position. Motere was one of the first beaten, and at the distance Royal Artist (outside, Great Emblem and View Halloo, rails) were in line to fight out the finish, while farther on Antique put in an effort. Royal Artist eventu-

i ally won by a neck from Great Emblem, with view Halloo a head away, Antique was right up fourth, clear of Motere, with Te Hoia, Limeen, Protomint (who raced ungenerously) and Tigerism ■followingy Great Emblem was pdnched at the finish and his rider was hampered. View Halloo was made to«( much use of. ; Favourite Pulled Up ! Trouble, favourite for the Hunters* Steeplechase, only lasted a round when hef broke down and was pulled up. Cat-i-mes and Neil disputed the lead for most of the journey, but Absent, who was quietly ridden at the back, ran to the front coming down the hill the last time and beaf Neil. The latter came again near the post but Absent had'a bit in hand and won by a head. John Bull was five lengths away and Mashoor and Cat-i-mes followed. John Bull showed a lot of prom- | ise. Neil and Cat-i-mes were not well i ridden. A Dead Heat A great finish was staged in the Welcome Stakes, Diatomous and Princess Doreen dead-heating. They were I the best backed. Gipsy Love began best, but Diatomous showed great pace ! to run to a clear lead very quickly-. : Behind him at the home turn were 1 Gipsy Love, Wait and See, Prineess Doreen and Gay Sheila. Diatomous ' hung out at the home bend but he ' retained his lead till on the post. I Here Prineess Doreen put in a strong ! finishirig effort and she got. ,up to share the honours with Diatomous. i Gipsy Love was two lengths away ' third, just in front of Wait and See. | Gay Sheila, Pelagia, Gold Poeket and No Doubt followed. Most likely im- ' provers are Pelagia, No Doubt and Wait and See.

A Good Hack Carfex and Good Run, best backed in the Gordon Handicap, duly paid the dividends. The former is a useful sort all right, while Good Run is such a big liorse, that he will improve as he goes along. Karangapai led to the home turn from Book Law, Carfex, Good Run, Woodfull, Palace and Teels. Here Carfex and Good Run drew away and the former won by a couple of lengths. Tarporley ran a good race into third place a length and a half back. with Holly Lu, Palace, Catch-'em, Woodfull, Prineess Bede and Consort following. Holly Lu ran a great race for his diminutive rider. Haiata broke a fetlock and was destroyed. A Big Dividend There was a regular boil over in the concluding event, the Flying Handicap, Chromadyne leading all the way to win at a long price, paying over a score, while backers of the second horse, Hunting Cry, a warm favourite, lost a portion of their investments. Chromadyne got the best of the jump-out anu was soon clear. Pomp joined hina in the lead at the end of a couple of furlongs and they were still there at the home turn, Black Songster being tailed off at this stage. Handy to the leading pair at the turn were Gay Lap (wide out), Whakapara, King's Archer, HuntingCry, Jalldy Karo and Speedmint. Pornp retired beaten near the post and Hunting Cry challenged, but Chromadyne kept him off to win by half a length, with Speedmint half a length further back, half a length ahead of Whakapara and Pomp. Next were Llanore and Gay Lap. Speedmint was finishing on and she should soon win a fair handicap. This race revealed the real Chromadyne, who appears to be back to his best form.
