"You must figlit the police .terror and agitate for the chiefs dismissal," declared a long letter from Mpscow, ipstructing Messrs Hahnin^tpp. and Llewellyn, of the Unemployed Workers' Union, signed Sydney Job Elias. Elias, aged 35 years, Was arrested yesterday owing to the discovery of the letter, wheh ihe police raided Hannington's office. Elias, who is chairman of the moVerhent, wrote the""letter dufing a visit to Russi'a. To-day he was ch'arged- at' Bow Street with inciting Hannington and Llewellyn to cause discontent, dissatisfaction, and ill-will between different classes of His Majesty's subjects, and create public disturhances against the police; The heighbourhood of the Police Court were elosely guarded. Ftother extracts from the MoscoW letter included: "There is no clear ihdicatioh that the movem'ent is trying to break the police terror in Birkenhead, ahd the faet is being overlooked that the police are suct'essfully biieaking Birkenhead's spirit. Some proposals must be made to the comrades of Birkenhead and Liverpool on tbe methods of fighting the police terror, and the agitation must be cohtinued in the streets simultaneously. The trade unions there must make a national call to the rest of the country to join the struggle." Replying to the Magistrate's question the prosecution said that the National Unemployed Workers' Movement, which organised unemployed marehes, is a section ' of the Third International, under whose instructions Elias- was acting. Accused was remanded. Bail was? refused.
