LOCAL AND GENERAL

Farm Land Derating A remit which has gone forward from the Opotiki Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union in connection with farm land derating was yesterday approved by that body at a meeting of its executive. Grateful Farmers The Opotiki branch of the Farmers' Union has forwarded a letter of thanks to Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P., for his efforts in arranging a meeting between the union's representatives and the Railways Board in Auckland. Unfortunately it was at too short notice for any Bay representatives to attend, but the matter was taken up by Mr. Williams and the union is expecting satisfactory results from his efforts. Railway Matters A report upon the present position in regard to the agitation in connection with the need for the revision of railway freights between Auckland and Taneatua was made by the president of the Opotiki branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union (Mr. A. Martin) at its meeting yesterday. Mr. Martin outlined the steps that had been taken to approach the Bay of Plenty Development League and informed his hearers that although they had had no oflicial communication, he understood from the press that the line was not to be closed and that the Railways Department was going into the comparative freights by road, rail and sea and that some progress might soon be expected.
