Heretaunga, Thursday. The New Zealand golf ch'ampionships opened at the Heretaunga links this morning, in ideal weather.* The course is.looking its best. The fairways are green and grassy, neither fast nor slow, and the putting greens have just sufficient keenness to make them interesting. To-day is an easy day, being devoted to the professional ancl amateur championship foursomes. The professionals set out first, the first pair leaving th'e tee at nine o'clock and the last at 9.35* The first amateurs, Liddle, Hurst, Fryer and Troutbeck, set out 10 minutes later. - * Expected to Improve Among the professionals, Moss and Rutter had sixes at the seventh and thirteenth. ; Neither was at his best, but is expected to improve this afternoon. Clements and Douglas were out in 37 and back in 36. A six at the secbnd was made up for by two's at th'e third and fifteenth. Dyke and Fuller were out and in in similar figures, with a six at the eighth. A momentary forgetfulness eost Branch and Blair two strokes, Branch at the second missing a putt, leaving a short one, which he knocked in, whereas his partner should have played. As among the professionals, the best amateur cards were 73, these being returned by Hornabrook and Horton, of Wairarapa, and the Black brothers. Hornabrook and Horton were very steady. Their cards read: Out: 4, 4, 4, 3, 4, 4, 5, 4; in 5, 4, 4, 5, 3, 4, 5, 4. The Black brothers' card read: Out, 4, 4, 3, 5, 3, 5, 4, 5-, 3„- in,4, 4, 5, 5, 3, 3, 4, 5, 4. Started. Uncertainly The two Duncans, M, H. and J. G. D. -also returne4 a card of 73. They started uncertainly, but soon settled down. They had a pretty three at the seventeenth. A. D. S.
