■By Telegraph — Copyr iglit) .
Rec. Nov. 3, 10.55 p.m. London, November 3. "The critical state of British agriculture is such as to justify a demand for a meat tax on foreign meat,'' was the claim made by an agricultural group, representing 300 Conservative members in the House of Commons. The Daily. Telegraph political correspondent states that. the Government. has decided not in any circumstances, to ask Parliament to agree to a tax on meat imports. The correspondent adds that the meat tax i& not feasible,- but the Government should be encouraged to come to some arrangement with Australia, New Zealand and the Argentine for temporary immediate restrictions of imports. Cabinet discussed the question at length as it fully realised the gravity of the position to the live stock industry. Ministers are considering the possibility of voluntary restrictions on imports and the matter will be discussed with the Dominions. Agriculturalists are insistent that nothing will meet the case but an immediate duty of fourpence a pound on all imported meat -with a preference of twopence to the Dominions.
