UNFAVOURABLE CONDITIONS MAR TENNIS CLUB OPENING

The official opening of the Opotiki Lawri Tennis Club took place at the courts last Saturday afternoon. There was a very fair number of members and friends present in spite of thei boisterous weather. Unfortunately a strong and cuttmg wind was in evidence during the early part of the afternoon and made" conditions most unpleasant and difficult. To ruin members' hopes of a full afternoon's play, light rain set in soon after -3 o'clock and soaked the courts. Refreshments, however, were awaiting members and friends at- the pavilion and under able supervision of the ladies' committee afternoon tea was served. In offieially opening the courts the president, Mr. R. H. Semple stressed the importanee of the courts receiving a good rolling and made a strong apP'eal to all male members to offer their services for such work. The finances of the club, he said, were low and if members desired good courts to play pn they could assist by giving the ground's committee their cooperation. The usual competitions will be included in this season's programme but as the result of experience gained in the past it is intended to commence them earlier than usual this year. This was considered necesSary on account of the usual dragging of competitions which very often resulted in some of them remaining unfinished at the close of the season.
