WEEK-END TRAMP
I f PICTURESQUE ROUTE ROTORUA CLUB MEMBERS HAVE ENJOYABLE OUTING LAKE AND BUSH SCENERY i During the week-end members of the Rotorua Tramping Club carried out an ambitious trip and fully proved their ability as trampers. • The objeetive of this trip was to make a crossing on the high country between Lake Okataina and Lake Okareka, and the route taken was as follows: — Rotokawa, Mt. Pukepoto, Lake Okataina, Lake Okareka, Wairoa Road, Rotorua. A start was made early on Sunday morning and a srnart walk for a little over an hour brought the party to I the foot- of Mt. Pukepoto, the ascent : being made in good time. From the : top the track runs through good bush i country for three or four miles and | then emerges on the fernland above ' Lake Okataina, and, although the lake looks beautiful from this point j it is practieally impossible to find i a suitable way down to the water's edge. The route followed keeps to the highland above the lake, and from here many exceedingly beautiful views of Lake Okataina, Lake Tarawera and surrounding districts may be obtained and the whole panorama is most inspiring. At one point the track does run down to the edge of the lake and at this spot the party took an opportunity to have lunch. The major part of the journey was accomplished by lunch time, but several hours good tramping in fern and wooded country was necessary before the shores of Lake Okareka canie into view. ' In the setting rays of the sun the party returned home via the Wairoa Road fully satisfied as to its accomplishment and gratified to have brought much new country within the scope of the club.
