MELBOURNE CUP

GREATEST HANDICAP RACE OF EMPIRE RUN TO-MORROW

The Melbourne Cup, the greatest handicap race of the British Empire, will be decided to-morrow at Flemington. The race is timed to start at 3.40 p.m., Australian time, which is equal to about 5.40 p.m., New Zealand time. On Tuesday the Dominion is more strongly represented than it has ever been, for it has six representatives. Compris, who won the Wellington Cup 'and has performed well in other distance events in New Zealand, can be claimed as .a New Zealand rep., for he was only recently sold to Mr. C. J. Lyons, of Ceylon and on his way to that country his owner decided to give him a race in the Melbourne Cup. He has been working satisfaetorily since his arrival, and/ with 9.1 is sure to run a great race. He was third in the Auckland Cupi last year. Admiral Drake won that event, after finishing second to Spearful in the New Zealand Cup , so that there is no doubt about him going the distance. Peter Jackson won both St. Legers (1" miles) last season, while Havering, after winning at Randwiek. ran

second in the Moonee Valley Cup (1 mile Si furlongs) last Saturday. Gaine Carrington failed in the A.J.C. Derby, but won the Clibborn Stakes (1 mile) at Randwiek, being placed second as the result of a protest. He has also beeh going along nicely in his work at Melbourne. Manawhenua has shown good form in New Zealand, and also in Australia since his arrival there. He is a great mud 'horse, and if the tracks remain soft, as they were during the present week, he should he in the picture at the finish. Sporting exchanges from Sydney indicate that Peter Pan, Oro, Rogilla and Lough Neagh are most favoured by the sporting writers in their weekend reviews for the big race.
