HAVE TO WAIT
UIFTING DEPRESSION TRADE POSITION IN ENGLAND KEY TO RECOVERY IN N.Z. TRANSPORT COSTS BLAMED. New Zealand will have to -wait until trades improves in England before there will be any sign of the depression lifting here, is the opdnion of a London business fnan, Mr. R. S. Keith, who is at present in Christchurch during the course of a tour of the Dominion. Business is bad here, he said to-day, but not as bad as in some places — England, for instance. One of the great troubles there was the transport problem, and he blamed this for much of the falling-off in trade. It was :also a big problem in New Zea'land. The cost of transport was far tOo high, and in England the reason for it, to a great extent, was bad organisation. Mr. Keith added that -Christchurch was to be congratulated in giving trolly-buses a trial. Their value in England was tremendous, and they would be quite as yaluable here too, if they were used more instead of the present vehicles. Mr. Keith said that it was said in England that more farmers were needed in New Zealand, but his experienee was that such was not the case. There were plenty of farmers here for the time being, although there probably would be more room for them when the world markets improved. There were many phases of farming which, in his opinion, could be developed, but it was no good doing anything in that direction until the overseas markets showed a good deal of improvement. New Zealand was a great little country for growing. The land was wonderfully fertile, and would grow almost anything. The people, Mr. Keith finds, are very hospitable, and he says he is seriously thinking of coming here to live when things improve.
