OUTSTANDING TALKIE
"SIN OF MADELON CLAUDET" DEPICTS DllAMATIC STORY. ADAPTION OF "THE LULLABY." Heralded as one of the outstanding talking pictures of the year, "The Sin of Madelon Claudet," Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer filmisation of the Edward Knohlock stage success, "The Lullawy," will open on Satu .-day, November 5, at the Majestic Tl eatre. The story is one of tremendous emotional sweep, depicting the melodramatic career of a woman who sinks to the lowest depths for the sake of her child. The picture is said to be marked with the same stirring qualities and stark drama which characterised "Stella Dallas" and Madame X," the nature of the plot leaving room for an adroit blending of romance and the extremes of comedy and tragedy. The central role of Madelon, the French giii who is deserted by her lover and subsequently becomes the victim of a'series of amazling circumstances, is played hy Helen Hayes, the New York stage star, who makes her first screen appearanee in this .production. The role gives Miss Hayes every opportunity for a display of her remarkable talents as an actress, for she is seen first as an attractive young girl, and then, as the progress of the story continues over a period of years, appears as an old, disillusioned and haggard woman. Prominent roles are played by Lewis Stone, as the Connt who raises the status of Madelon from that of a ; washwoman to mistress of a luxurious | home, only to result in her being sent | to prison later; and by Neil Hamilton, j as the Ameriean artist with whom Madelon elopes but with whom she I has only a short-lived happdness. Most j of the comedy material is in the hands j of Cliff Edwards and Marie Prevost as a newly married couple who enjoy j fighting almost as much as loving. | The supporting cast also includes Robeit Young, Jean Hersholt, Karen Morley, Charles Winninger, Alan Hale, Halliwell Hobbes, Lennox Pawlev and Russ Powell.
