SHORT CIRCUITS
All the world loves a lover, except when. he is driving a motor car in crowded traffic. ' . :i= * * * A legal authority mentions that a cow has a legal right to use the'road". Motorists say this only confirms what the cow seems to have known all along. * * * * Experiments have recently been made in England with pneumatic tyres fitted to farm carts, and it was found that one horse could then do the work of two. * * .* H= When cleaning heavily-carhoned-up exhaust pipes a simple implement ean be found in a fairly long pieee of old chain, which', when pulled backward and forward throngh the pipe, kiiocks off the carbon, which 'ean then r'eadily be shaken out. The difficulty of holding a round rod, which is sometimes necessary in a roadside repair, can be overcome by wrapping a piece of emery cloth around the object, with' the biting side inwards, and then gripping the cloth with a pair of pliers. Quite a firm hold can he obtained without damaging the rod. :k * * * A small boy whose father had forgotten a parking hy-law went to school the other day and informed his classmates that a policeman had called at his place selling hlue papers and his mother had honght one. * * 4. *F To clean leather upholstery, wash with warm water and a litte ammonia to rexnove the dirt and when dry give a good coating of any good brand of leather dressing; or raw linseed oil and turpentine mixed in proportions of two parts of oil to one of turpentine. * * * Most faiiures of vacuum tanks are due to air leaks in the tank itself or in the vacuuhi pipe to the engine, or else the dirt which has clogged the pipes. The tank should be. dismantled once a year and the sediment cleaned out,-' this also being a sound precaution when a used car is hought. Z'f * iji * When assembling be very careful that the gaskets are properly fitted and in good condition, and that pipe unions are sound and tight. Also drain the sump on the bottom of the main fuel tank to remove any sediment that has collected there, and might ultimately reach the vacuum tank or choke the main fuel pipe. ❖ -l' ❖ ^ When making small drills from knitting needles or silver steel wire, many amateurs find difficulty in hardening and tempering them properly. A very simple method — and one which' invariably produces good results — is to heat the drill to a bright cherry l'ad in a clean flame, and then plunge it into the cut half of a raw potato. Near Gonzolales, in Texas, U.S.A., an experimental road in which cotton cloth is used to stabilise the bitumen surfacing has just been opened. The cotton, in sheets 3-9 inch'es wide, was laid over the specially prepared hed prior to the application of the surface. * * * * "An experieneed Cairo motorist" states the Sp.'ainx, "despite the fact that he lisps badly, has decided to make his next car a Morris Isis. Can you imagine him going to the agents and saying, 'Pleas's show us a Morris Isis six saloon?'" He might easily have asked for a Morrith Ithith.
