PUBLIC'S RIGHT SCHOOL BOOKS CONTRACT AND RECENT ORDER-IN- B , COUNCIL ..s. GOVT. MEMBER'S ATTACZ

Special Cohimissionfer) .

Wellington, Thursday. Suggestionsr that the school text hook contract and the Order-in-Coixdcil relatirig to the co'iistruction of picture theatres be referred to a tribunal or to a Parliamentary committee, were made by Mr. H. M. Camphell (Government, Hawke's Bay), iii the House of Representatives to-night. "Both matters should be inquired into," said Mr. Campbell, "in order that the mind of the public may be put at rest. 1 think in common fairness to those who stipport the Government, the whole matter should he cleared up." As a result of the Order-in-Coun-cil, relating to picture theatre construetion, a picture theatre in Hastings had been held up for eighteeh months. The erection of this building would give employment to 45 tradesmen for four or five months and this aspect of the question was an important one as in Hastings there were 900 unemployed including 700 tradesmen. On the one hand the Gbvernment was urging private individuals to set the wheels of industry going and on the other hand, it was preventing operations of enterprise. "Kept Out of Work" These men are being kept out of work which would be available if only the Government would allow it to proceed, said Mr. Camphell. "I appeal to the Government to use a little commonsense and allow business to earry on." | He declared that the whole of the Government enterprise in various trading activities had had a disastrous etfect. The operations of the Meat Export Board was another form of interferenee and its actions had ' been mainly responsible for the collapse of the Home market. It was stated that the European pork industry was to blame, but the action of the board had swept the English market. During May, 18 shipments of meat had arrived in London from New Zealand and another ten had arrived during the first eleven days in June. The result had been that the ; market collapsed.
