RELEASE OF FILMS
DOMINION SEES TALKIES AHEAD OF ENGLISH TOWNS. PRICES ALSO LOWER. New Zealand is certainly not behind the times so far as the release of new films is concerned. According to Mr. R. L. Grant, representative of British International Pictures Ltd., who is at present in Christchurch, theatres in the main New Zealand eifcies throw films on the screen at least six weeks ahead of their general release dates in England. Sometimes this country is as much as three months ahead. This statment applies particularly to British-made tr.ikies, l-ut this Dominion is not behind either when it comes to the screening of Hollywood production, and, relatively speaking, the release dates for American films here are well ahead of those in England. Mr. Grant explained that the release of new pictures in England was according to schedule, and although they were given a premiere screening at one of the main London theatres, they were usually not released' for general exhibition until some weeks after. On the other hand, as soon as eompleted, they were sent to New Zealand, and, other things being equal, were released to the public without any of the delay belonging to the English system. For this reason, English' film magazines often contained the reviews of talkies which had already been seen some time before by the New Zealand public.
