Tauranga, Tuesday. There was a large attendapce. at a meeting of the Farmers' Union on • Saturday afternoon. Mr. F. W*: Kean presided, and the Hon. C. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture, was also present. . Following a discussion ott iinemi ployment matters, Mr. Macmillan addressed the meeting. He took exception to statements that had beeii made concerning him in the _ pa|>er "Farming First," in connection with a cartoon dealing with foot and motiti) . disease, in one corner of whi'ch it wai stated: "The Department of Agriculture intends taking the responsibility of the introduction of fodt and mouth disease." Mr. Maemiirah also pointed out the follbwittg wor'fiing at the bottom of the caftoon: "The Minister of Agriculture: "It" is better to have an ambulance at 'the bottom of the cliff than a fenqe at the top. I am the ambulance.' " Mr. Macmillan pointed out that the inverted comma made it appear that the"words within the quotations were his. , He strenuously denied haWing made such a statemeht. Going to Resign The Minister also referred to the application for an additional , cold storage license in Auckland and eefmbatted certain statements, made in this connection when he, asked dairy factory suppliers for their opinion on the question of granting a license-v _ Mr. Macmillan then, stated that he was going to resign , from meWbership of the Farmers' Union, Auckland ■provinee, as he objected to the tiealment meted out by "Farming Mrst'A However, he would not seyer Kis connection with the union, but would join anotber branch in the Dominion. , Mr. Stevens moved that the editor in question be asked to applogise t'o Mr. Macmillan. Mr. Campion 'seconded. , An amendment was moved by Mr. W. Carleton "That this meeting „resents the, attacks made by "Farming First" on the Minister *6f Agricuiture." This was seconded by Mr. C. McNaughton and carried.
