THE CHILTON cup 4 ' FIRE BRIGADE CONTEST AT GOVERNMENT GRGUNDS YESTERDAY PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES Despite the boisterous weather conditions prevailing throughout yesterday, the annual demonstration bebetween fire brigades of the Bay of Plenty district for the Chilton cup was held at the Government Grounds and resulted in the Rotorua Brigade rctaining possession of the cup. . Notwithstanding the heavy condition of the ground, the times in -the various events compared well w'ith previousj years, and demonstrated the excellent standard of proficiericy a'ttained by the brigades of the. district. In four of the five competitions, Rotorua were credited with the- higliest points, but in the three-men hose and standpipe event the team went to pieces and were well beaten -hy ' the Tauranga team, who eventually occupied second place for the cup." Owing to the bad weather, the 'demonstration of fire fighting b.y thb Rotorua Brigade in suppressing a fir'e in a specially ereeted shack on the ground, was not held. The opening" procession scheduled to proceed frqm Aravi/a Street to the ground was 'also abandoned. At the Fire Brigade station last evening, the chairman pf the Rotorqa Fire Board, Mr. F. Goodson, presldent at a social function for the presentation of the Hawkins' and Chilton Cups, and medals to the winning team. • 4 - Before making the presentations Mr. Goodson said that he seemed to be developing a habit of making presentations to Rotorua; firemen and congratulated the local team qn their fine performance in again retaining possession of the cups. Their" d^play, he said, proved that efficiency could only be obtained by constapt attention to practice, and hoped that at Te Puke next year, the contests would be as keen as had been witnessed in this year's demonstratipns. Trophies Presented He then presented to Fireman F. Stewart, of Rotorua, the Hawkins' Cup, whieh has now been won by him on three successive occasion. The members of the winning Rotorua team, Firemen F. Stewart, F. Briggs, H. Phipps,. Price and Fairley were then presented with the Chilton Cup. In a brief speech, Fireman F. Stewart thanked the visiting Opotiki, Tauranga, Te Puke and Whakatane teams for the fine spirit in which the contests had been decided and said that although the Rotorua team had made many mistakes they were, nevertheless, very gratified at retaining possession of the cup. The captain of the Tauranga team congratulated' Rotorua on their conclusive win and in doing this, said that he was speaking not only op behalf of his team, but on behalf of the entire Tauranga brigade. * In reply to a toast to the United Fire Brigades' Association, proposed by Deputy-Superintendent Balsdpn, Captain T. J. Watts, advisory superintendent of the association, congratulated the winning team on its display and then referred to the claims the association had been putting forward for certain privileges from the Government. He counselled all members of fire brigades to assist the association in its claims for recognition and said that he felt sure, after witnessing contests in many towns, that it would not be long before the Dominion championship was held in the Auckland district. Superintendent Ward (Whakatane) proposed the toast of the donor of the Chilton Cup, Mr. H. Chilton, and - said that the brigades were greatly indebted to him for providing the opportunity for the annual contests.
Donor Well Pleased In replying' Mr. Chilton said that he had presented the trophy in ari endeavour to promote incre'ased efficiency among the brigades and was exceptionally pleased to see the pro-g-ress that had been made.
