match at perth • v • ' ENGLAND DECLARES WITH 334 IN FIRST INNINGSWESTRALIANS OAREFUL

— By Telegraph— Copyright).

Rec. Oct. 24, 11 p.m. Perth, October 24. | England declared at eight wickets ? for 334 in the first innings o-n the | resumption of play. The Westra'lians batted very carefully. Curtin was j out with the sixth ball of 'the first t over. England tried out its bowlers, ! making six changes by luncheon time, Bowes being tried three times, but apparently he was not very formidable. The wicket was better than anti- ! cipated, but was bumpy at one end. | After luncheon, the Englishmen picked up the bowling pace and quick- ' ly muddled the Westralians. Hill- . smith was dismissed by Brown's first ball. He went for a big hit at the f ball round the head, making an easy catch. It was his first false strolce in | 81 minutes. The wicket improved under the hot" sun and gave the bowlers pace. Jardine secured a life by a second miss by Wyatt, but he did not attempt to play a ball which drove the hails 15 yards. Thp'West Australian captain made a good showing and met several changes of bowling, but was stumped by Verity, playing a ball in on the wicket. He took 45 minutes in getting 36. Verity was then nipping venomously from the pitch. The innings ended with one run saving a follow on. Jardine put Wyatt and Leyland in as the opening pair. Wyatt hit freeiy, but was clean beaten in Halcombe's second over. Solid batting followed, Leyland shaping aggressively. Ames was dismissed in playing a yorker from O'Shaunessey. He batted 51 minutes to secure 19. Brown retrieved his first innings failure by making a smart 28. Verity played solidly for 17 and time was called with the score at five for 152. The impression the Englishmen gave was that they had not found their land legs or form. It is impossible to take a serious view of the match. Brqdman and five inter-State cricketers aiTived to-day to participate in the second match on Thursday, which with continued fine weather will be a far different proposition from this game.
