WITH THE GALLOPERS

"Canard.")

waikato hunt on labour day. WET GOING FAVOURS PROTOMINT AND TRADESMAN IN DOUBLE. \ chromadyne one to watch.

(Notes by

With the large memhership of the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Cluh, th'ere will b'e a very definite interest taken in the Waikato Hunt Club's annual meeting held at Cambridge to-day and judging by tbe riuniber of people who have expressed their intention of being present the neighbouring elub has no reason to regret its assistance to the local hunt club some time ago. Owners from these parts too have done their sh'are. 1

The first race to trouble punters is the Farmers' Steeplechase of 2i miles, and the field is an average one with some fair sorts engagea. Sir 'Glamis is a good sort of hunter, but may find . the weight as much as he can carry, for he is only a handful; Galapago went two slashing races at Ellerslie until he fell in one. In the other he was third to hetter sorts than h'e is meeting to-day. Koewhiwhi ran a third and a first at the Pakuranga Hunt Point-to-Point and displayed sound staying power, for it was in j three-milers that he ran with' 11.0 up. Lady Waimarie is not bad, but Ironic, who ran moderate races at the local point-to-point, was a bit burly then and should have improved in the meantime. Red Ross is not a bad j sort, but down the handicaps is Pinto, j who won the first race at Tamaki ! East and ran third in another. He is as likely as anything to upset the pot. Known form points to: — Galapago Koiewhiwhi Pinto from — • FARMERS' STEEPLECHASE, of £100; about 2 h miles. — Sir Glamis, 11.9; Galapago, 11.8; Koewhiwhi, 11.8; I Lady Waimarie, 11.6; Little Arch, | 11.1; Harviestown, 11.1; Ironic, DisI tress, Ahioro, Miss Modern, Red Rose, | Maunga King, Surveyor mare, Bloomj ing Hcather, Pinto, 11.0. (It may be noted that Koewhiwhi, I Lady Waimarie and Little Arch are J in the Hunt Cup.) i Simeon has pride of place in the ! Hunters' Hurdles, but he is also in ' the Cup, whereas Town Beauty, who should hold him safe, is also in the Bracelet. Town Beauty will be real hard in whatever she starts in. Cargen showed signs the last time out of returning to form, but his jumping is still dicky. Mashoor, on the other hand, is schooling v/ith great confiaence and the wet conditions are all in his favour. Absent is a game little jumper with not, p'erhaps, the necessary stamina, but he is worth watching in his chosen race. If anything else comes down, Jack Rae's roan will be there. Sub-Editor has shown promise as a batten negotiator and the Mamaku horse, Tapapa, has been getting his final polish under Tom Morris. He should run much the better for it, for he was not quite at the proper pitch last time out. Carl Hertz is useful, the same app'lying to Lurina, Abbey Dream and Morley, Mr. Greenshield's horse being a good sort of a hurdler, but he has but to rap a fence and, from his style of lepping, he will do a bit of ploughing. Royal England is probably not ready. He was pairchased for a big sum for a Thames sportsman and broke all the watches on the track there, but was injured and turned out. This is his first since coming in. Emancipation also comes from Thames and shaped very green at her first attempt over battens. She has been doing better and has an outsider's chance. The Roadman is in the Cup, but did not impress at Ellerslie, pulling so hard that he ran himself out and fell. J ohn Bull is the tallest horse in training to-day since Crimestor dropped out, and he is a tremendous jumper. The I Cambridge people don't expect him to be beaten at any price; however, it is a big field and anything might'happen. Very open this one, with chances held by Simeon, Town Beauty, Mashoor, Absent, Tapapa, Morley and John Bull. Of these, Town Beauty, Absent, Mashoor, The Roadman and Tapapa have other. engagements and the pen will play its part. Given a start, the following may run well: — Town x>eauty John Bull Mashoor Tapapa might surprise. from — HUNTERS' HURDLE RACE, of £125; about 1 S miles. — Simeon, 11.5; Town Beauty, 11.2; Cargen, Mashoor, 10.4; Absent, 9.8; Sub-Editor, 9.6; Tapapa, Carl Hertz, Royal England, Abbey Dream, Morley, Emancipation, The Roadman, John Bull, 9.0. * * * There are two divisions in the Bardowie Hack, and on her runhing at Avondale there are likely to he many friends for Lady Lulu, who most certainly was unlucky. Searcher is a fair sort and can carry weight. Gay Marigold was expected at Avondale, but missed. One down the list which handled wet going nicely last season was Transaction. He may, however, not be ready. Beryl Latour should hahdle the going and she has been working nicely. Kingsland likes the mud, as does Tatyoon. Two divvies are to be paid out and the public ehoiee may indicate: — Lady Lulu Tatyoon-Star Mint bracket. Transaction from — BARDOWIE HANDICAP, First Division. — First horse £60. Searcher 9.3, Lady Lulu 9.1, Cateau, Gal Marigold, London 8.9, Bo'oklaw 8.7, Abbey Dream, Transaction 8.3, Beryl Latour, Dark Rewa, Kahau, Kingsland, Merry Lap, Sir Musk, Star Mint, Tatyoon 8.0. $ ^ ^ A regular mudlark is in the next, Dark Marble, and so are Welcome Lu, Last Lap, Good Run (very unlucky at Avondale, who is also bracketed with a fair sort in Keith Hall. The

type are, but the public may choose: Good Run-Keith Hall bracket. Dark Marble Consort from BARDOWIE HANDICAP, Second Division. — First horse £60. Lord Aintree 9.2, Dark Marble, Welcome Lu 8.11, Foreign Money, Illuminelli, Last Lap 8.9, Arawa Rose, Rekaraurau 8.3, Consort, Good Run, Keith Hall, Master Norval, Safe Bank, Sammy, Schizanthus 8.0. Bracketed are Beryl Latour-Dark Rewa; Kahau-Kingsland; Merry LapSir Musk; Star Mint-Tatyoon. Braekets are Good Run-Keith' Hall; Master Norval-Safe Bank; and Schi-zanthus-Sammy. The state of the going will play an enormous part in the running of the Members' Memorial and the topweights will have their work cut out to hold off some of the smarter down the ladder. Antique showed signs of coming into form at Avondale, for he finished from a long way back just behind the placed horses and that was a good performanee, in view of his weight and the time put up. Valroe is also a fair sort and looks well. Sargon is unsound, but if the sting is out may surprise. Protomint is the logical favourite on his running at Avondale, for he revels in heavy going (he is by C'atmint) and with a decent rid-er up should be very hard to head off. Baroscope went off his feed but was doing all right yesterday and is expected to run well forward. Grand Tea has been in steady work in Thames and Tommy Scott expects him to show up prominently. He likes it hock-deep, and runs well fresh and is now quite sound again, having got over his poisoning. Eager Rose is a good sort when ready and likes the going. soft. She ran moderately well .at Avondale and has an outside show. Cruachan is a mudlark, but his courage is under suspicion. Chromadyne has won over nine furlongs and the wetter it is the better he goes. He is also in the sprint, and whichever he starts in should not be neglected. Nassock is always to be considered, especially in the going; Limeen is showing good form and her third at Avondale will bring her into the limelight. Thespis and Illuminagh are more likely to take on other races. Thespis is preferred of the two. Flying Prince likes wet going (remember the local heats last , February) and will be coupled with Baroscope. The race is extremely hard to sort out but favouritism may include: — Protomint Grand Tea Chromadyne from — * MEMBERS MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of £150; 11 miles. — Antique, 9.12; Valroe, Sargon, 8.3; Protomint, 7.9; Baroscope, 7.8; Grand Tea, 7.5; Eager Rose, Cruachan, Chromadyne, 7.2; Nassock, Limeen, Thespis, Illuminagh, Flying Prince, 7.0. =1= * =1 The main -event for the spectators is next, the Hunt Cup, and there are 11 carded, of whom Simeon, Mashoor, Absent, Koewhiwhi, Lady Waimarie, Little Arch and The Roadman are elsewhere engaged. Simeon is not elegible Slump must have a big shoF, especially in heavy going, for ha is a seasoned jumper and can stick on. Jen has fair credentials, but so far not in heavy going and this may be against her. Trouble, which was omitted from some lists of acceptances should he very close up at the finish, for he , has class. Mashoor and Absent, if started, may do well, particularly the former, whilst Te Koroke a few seasons ago showed distinct promise. The Roadman has a jumper's chance, and Koewhiwhi can go three miles easily. It is not an easy race to sum up, but favourites may he. — Trouble Slump Koewhiwhi In the absence of any of these, Jen should he handy. from — WAIKATO HUNT, of £200; about 3 miles. — Simeon, 10.11; Trouble, 10.2; Slump, Jen, 10.0; Mashoor, 9.13; Absent, 9.3; Koewhiwhi, Lady Waimarie, Te Koroke, Little Arch, The Roadman, Cat-i-mes, 9.0. * :I: * * There is a big field again in the Bruntwood Hack, and it should be remembered that by this time the track will be cut up a bit, especially near the rails and post positions will count for a lot. King's Knave and L'Allegro have 10.4, but that is not too much for good ones. Valu'eless, who went such a race in the Carbine Plate, should be very hard in 6| furlongs. Hollyholm likes -mud, as do Hiata, Lueidus, Senorita (paid a big diwie at Marton), Te Taone and Valpai. The winner may be in this lot' and is well coneealed. In the circumstances the selection may be all wrong of: — Valueless L'AIlegro Senorita from — BRUNTWOOD HACK HANDICAP, of £100; 6i furlongs: — King's Knave, L'AIlegro, 10.4; Valueless, 9.6, Holly Holm, 9.3; Gigantic, 9.2; Hiata, 8.12; Welcome Boy, King Win, 8.10; Limex, Rose Lupin, 8.3; Lord Aintree, 8.2; Lady Lulu, 8.1; Welcome Lu, Moonflefet, Senorita, Lueidus, Lord

Britain, Merry Lap, Ta Taone, Valpai, 8.0. So many of the field in the Ladies' Bracelet have other engagements that it is more of a puzzle to know what will start than to sort out likely ones. For instance, only five of the 21 acceptors are not elsewhere engaged. Valsimon, Beila, Miss Modern, Cromwell and Clontarf Bill, and with the exception of Valsimon, who is a remote possibility, none of them appeal. In tbe eircumstances, on? can only indicate what, if started, is likely to run well. On recent form, taking into consideration the state of the track, the public may suppcrt: — Town JE_n_:y Galapago Consort from — LADIES BRACELET HANDICAP, of £100; 1.1 miles. — Thespis, Town Beauty, 11.12; Sub-Editor, 11.9; Valsimon, Cargen, 1.1.5; London, 11.0; Emancipation, 10.10; Abbey Dream 10.8; Rekaraurau, Biela, Clontarf Bill, Miss Modern, Tapapa, — aunga King, Galapago, Royal England, Cromwell, Consort, Prince Merriwee, Surveyor mare, Morley , Blooming Heather, Pinto, 10.7. The open sprint is another puzzle, for again there are too many dual acceptors. Huntingdon is in only once and he likes soft traeks, even his 9.0 being no bar to success. Paganelli never could handle mud and it will surprise if he starts. Tradesman is not going to Trentham and will" be hard hera after his Avondale win. Gay Lap is very well and he just loves the mud. He will he very hard. Chromadyne has his chance here if started, and Persham is a proven wallower in mud. Cruachan may do better in the Members' Memorial, and other s with chances are Imamint, Valueless and Valuation, all of whom prefer it soft. A very open race, with public fancy likely to include: — Tradesman Gay Lap Chromadyne from — BOLLARD MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of £125; 6h furlongs: — Huntingdon, 9,0; Paganelli, 8.12; Gay Lap, 8.6; Tradesman, 8.5; Chromadyne, 8.0; Persham, 7.8; Soloist, 7.5; Cruachan, 7.2; Imamint, Gigantic, Valuation, Miss Lorraine, Flying Prince, Valueless, 7.0.
