EPSOM TROTS
"Misere")
GOOD RACING SEEN DIRECT MORNING MAKES . IT THREE ON END. LITTLE GUY'S SPRINT.
(Special by
Epsom, Sat. The track was holding and the" racing keen at Provincial Headquarters to'-day and the public, undeterred by a showery morning, turned out in large numbers for the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club's spring Meeting. Direct Morning, well suited by the conditions, ran an excellent race to take the Jellicoe. The other leg was won by Little Guy the double being at the shortest price known for the last ten years. Betting was fairly brisk but would . have been brisker had three "divvies" been paid and it is possible that the elub will turn to this method of encouraging investors. The machine handled £17,950/5/- compared with £19,220 last year a drop of £1269s 15s. Places were run right to time. Win Huon Duly Lands The most consistent trotter in the race, especially in mud conditions, "Win Huon duly landed (as predicted by "Misere") from a red hot favourite in Nell Volo who certainly trotted well when she did trot. Waskasu was first away, Kataio and Nell Volo jigging. When they settled down Waskasu led Manna's Son, Kataio, Grand Triumph, Win Huon and Nell Volo (breaking). Passing the stand Kataio led Manna's Son, Waskasu (breaking), Win Huon, Nell Volo (breaking) and Grand Triumph with Moko Girl making up ground. Win Huon set out after the leaders and Nell Volo tried to go with him, but went up and Win Huon had a convincing lead at the turn, Manna's - Son and Kataio both leaving their feet. Win Huon was not troubled to win by one and a-half lengths from Nell Volo with Manna's Son third, five lengths back followed by ■ Moko Girl who came with a great rattle, Waskasu and Grand Triumph. Win Huon's consistency won, but , Nell Volo when she settles down will take a lot of stake money. Fell After Passing Post There was a sensational ending to The Improvers' Handicap for Stormy Mack at last broke his run of bad luck and won only to crash after passing the post ahead of the favourite, Lislea. It was a lovely start and Pedlar, Nellota, Stormy Mack, Regina Derby, Cognet, Fisher, Cimarron and Lislea were well away in that ' order. Stormy Mack went to the front to lead Pedlar (who broke up), Lislea, Regina Derby, Fisher, Cogent and Cimarron. Stormy Mack and Lislea were on terms around the back with Regina Derby and Fisher in striking distance f ollowed by Cimarron and Mazda. Stormy Mack just lasted long enough to top off Lislea by a short neck with the Raider who came from the clouds, third, two and a-half lengths back. Fisher was next followed by Regina Derby, Cimarron and Pedlar.
Direct Morning on the Bit What a good one Direct Morning is, was shown by the fact that he won the Jellicoe with his tongue over the bit pulling up. Carnui, Direct Morning and Arabond went away, but First Flight lost fully 100 yards by failing to strike her straps and then finished fourth. She will be hard next time out. When a round had gone, Direct Morning had run to the front from Carnui, Arabond, Anon, Pageant and Kewpie's Triumph. Peter Pirate who got a fiy was well up to his field. Direct Morning went so
well that he improved on his field and Carnui who went more generously than for months, led Arabond, Anon and Pageant on the back stretch with First Flight making a run. Nothing had a chance with Direct Morning who won by four lengths from Carnui with Anon, third, and First Flight, fourth. Then came Pageant, Arabond, Peter Pirate and Kewpie's Triumph, the last named breaking his hopples in the second round. Body Blow for Punters Punters made Guid Hairst a redhot favourite carrying £1021 10s, but he galloped most of the way, and finally finished last. Punters had a body blow for Realty came in and ; won by six lengths from Pukemiro. > Margaret Wallace was first to show ' up, but after two furlongs had passed Guid Hairst was in front from Margaret Wallace, Realty, Homeward, Pukemiro and Claeo well back. When tackled Guid Hairst left his feet and Pukemiro tried for a run on the rails, but was disappointed and had to pull out. Realty came away in the last half mile to win from Pukemiro with Homeward third and Margaret Wallace fourth. Then came Claeo and Prince Etawah with Guid Hairst who was second into the straight, a bad last. ; Moko Bells Just Homs Moko Bells and Marble Star f ought
out a great finish in the Mountain, in which the winner was favourite (£604 10s). Marble Star hopped out and went for the liek of his life, whilst the following order was Billy Carbine, Hue Coronado, Moko Bells, E1 Merit (who was slow away) and Moko Giri. There was no alteration in the leaders and Windchat improved his position round the back while Hue Coronado got a knock. Marble Star began to tire as Moko Bells challenged but hung on very gamely, but the Peter Moko gelding prevailed- by a neck with E1 Merit who had not had the best of runs,. third. Windchat fourth, followed by Moko Girl, Hue Coronado and Carl Mack, who broke continuously. A One "Divvie" Field The defection of Fisher, Historian and Pedlar reduced the October field to five and of these Gold Seam dwelt at the start and took no serious part in the race. Lady Amanda. who was running all last season in a 3.45 class without being able to get anywhere was produced by Bob McMillan and spread-eagled all of the field, but Wee Machine who just failed to reach her. Betterwin was favourite, but failed to see it out, and Sister Chris did not do well enough to keep the pace with the winner. The winner went 3.31 2-5 off a 3.40 mark on a holding track. Little Guy's Soft Thirig Little Guy was sent out favourite for the second leg of the double and had everything made easy for him. He went off and the rest of the field appeared not to worry any further. Real Girl ran second all the way and finished there. Te Wahia was third most of the way, but in the run home (it was just a dawdle and a sprint), Kewpie's Triumph got up third with Kewpie's Guy fourth, and Anon, 'Pageant and Brentlight following in that order. One For Sid August Heavily backed, the August braclcet Homeward — June Norcida was successful in the last race, Homeward being saved until the last furlong when he came away to beat Nathaniel by one and a-half lengths. Jersey Thorpe was first to strike his straps and topk the lead from Nathaniel, Homeward, Francis Lincoln and Some Dillon, who made up his handicap j too fast. Claeo ran into third place j at the mile and from then on to the home turn it was Nathaniel, Homeward, Rolfe Audubon, Some Dillon and Caeo. Jersey Thorpe tangled and all but fell during the journey, but put in a great run to get fourth one and a-half lengths behind Rolfe Audubon. Some Dillon wilted and Lady Coronado with a new driver did not settle down too kindly.
