SPORTING DOGS' LICENSES
(To the Editor.) Sir, — I quite agree with Mr. C. E. Burrows that it would he a great injustice to owners of spoi'ting dogs to charge them £2 for a license. If it is done to stop sbeep worrying it will have no effect. The trouble arises from the large number of so-called sporting dogs, running around small villages, Maori pa's ete., mostly half starved. Th'ese dogs will take to anything to seeure food, and I venture to say none of them are registered. I would suggest that the man appointed to register the dogs should go round now and destroy all unregistered animals for whieh he cannot find an owner. A short time ago I shot two halfhred mongrels which were worrying sheep in the Recreation ground at Ngongotaha. Neither dogs had a collar on, and no one would own them, so 'why allow these animals to roam at large, and then want to penalise sporting dog owners. Another cause of sheep worrying is the large number of mongrel bitches running loose. They wander all over the district, and consequently sheep worrying results. I know of at least six unregistered bitches in this place. Why not put a bigger license on bitches and then people would only keep a good one and look after it. This would do away with' the sheep worrying mongrels which are at large. Trusting that some abler pen will ' take this matter up, — I am, etc., H. ROWLAND. Ngongotaha, Oct. 21.
