TRENTHAM MEETING FAST PASSAGE SHOTJLD BE CLOSE IN HANDICAP. PRINCESS DOREEN IN STAKES.

(Notes by

With the New Zealand Cup meeting only a short while oflf, there is botmd to be any amount of interest taken in tha Trentham races on Saturday and Monday, and form will be strongly canvassed for future reference. The day starts off with the Glen Hurdles and there is plenty of performances among the ten acceptors. Captain's Gift, fresh from Aussie, is sure to have friends, but Henry of Navarre, who won so handsomely at the Trentham winter meeting, is sure to he bstter supported, for he relishes the course. Full Mark won a-high-weight last Saturday, and he is evidently fit as a fiddle. - Jayson is also seasoned, whilst Conjuror II may not start liere. Warzone has been knocking at the last three meetings, but Royal Yisitor, on his Avondale form, will ue one of the hardest to head off. The other three have outsiders' ehanees. It is likely to prove a good race, with preferences for: — • Royal Visitor, Full Mark Hern-y of Navarre from — GLEN HURDLE HANDICAP, of £200; 12 miles. — Captain's Gift, 11.7; Henry of Navarre, iO.13 ; Full Mark, 10.12; Jayson, 10.0; Conjuror II., 9.12; Warzone, Royal Visitor, 9.11; Arrowzone, Bright Song, Prinee of Grange, 9.0. *. :!: •* The non-classic event for the two-year-olds, the Taita Handicap of four furlongs, has attracted a niee field of youngsters, *of whom Doilar Prince, Lady Nan and Star Artist all have reasonable form and exparience. Probably Star Artist will be suited bettar by the four than five furlongs, whilst No Doubt is a promising sort. The form so far revealed points to: — Dollar Prince Lady Nan Star Artist from — ( TAITA HANDICAP. of £160; 4 furlongs: — First View, No Doubt, Platter, 8.1; Ben Swift, Dellar, Prince Rereatu, 8.1; Diatomous, Palm Queen, Secrecy, Star Artist, Lady Nan, 7.10; Golclen Hair, 7.9. * * S: =1 Punters are likely to have a real hcodache before they solve the pro.blem of the Wainui Mile. There are 19 acceptors, comprising some of the best milers in the North Island and several from the South. Cricket Bat heads the list and he should carry his 9.-5 well enough. Chief Link is fairly in with 9.3, but it is from lower dovn the handicap that one is inclined to look for the winner. Korokio, if she talces this on, should be well in the running, but she is expected, if at Trentham, to be home and dried one day or other. She may, on the other hand, race at Waverley, ihe Redfern filly is going to play a big part in the rich handicaps ere the season ends. Gold Trail did not apI'eai much at Avondale the first day and is bad at the barrier. The second day she fell and may still be feeling the effeets. Tigerism is very nicely placed at 7.8 and he should be close up at the end. Water Power has decent form of lato, as has Eminent, Head Serang and Red Sun, the last particularly so. La Poupee finished with such a resolute run the last day at Trentham that she cannot be left out of calculations. A very open race, with public fancy likely to be. — Korokio Tigerism Red Sun from — WAINUI HANDICAP of £200. One mile. Cricket Bat 9.5, Chief Link 9.3, Minerval, Ranelagh 8.7, Fiji, Grecian Prince, Rational II 8.5, High Comedy, Merry Peel, Korokio 8.3, Gold Trail, 7.13, Tigerism, Water power, 7.8, Eminent, Head Serang, La Poupee, Red Sun, Sir Pombal, Tout le Mond 7.7. ^ The hack seven, the Rimutaka, is equally hard and here, too, there is quit'e a lot of recent winning form to ruzzle the aspirant for divvies, of which, by the way, there will be three in all nine horse races and two in five horse heats. Gay Court has at last struck form anu she will go on. Plateau is a good one and Ben Hur is in winning vain. Flower is useful, as are Aesculus, Forest Stag, High Grader, Bee Acre and Cardinal Moon. Just a toss up if it shows: — Plateau AeSculus Gay Court from — RIMUTAKA PIACK HANDICAP, of £160; 7 furlongs: — Gay Court, 9.1; Ben Hur, 8.5; Plateau, 8.4; Lyrical, 8.3; Vitaphone. Flower, Emotion, 8.1; Aescalus, 7.11; Solitaire II., Aga Khan, 7.8; Forest Stag, 1 Carfex, 7.5; Dick Whittington, Drum Fire, High Grader, 7.3; Auckland Gas, Azure, Bee Acre, Clangor, Cardinal Moon, Lancet, Moab Queen, 7.0. Then comes the main race, the Wellington Handicap of 11 furlongs, and this is the place where the true stayers are found. Gay Crest, for all his 9.10, is a real racehorse, as his defeat of Bronze Eagle and Karapoti over 12 furlongs showed. Hunting Cry may not yet be quite ready, but his runs at Avondale would sharpen him up. Fast Passage has been doing all that has been Jtsked of her and she should be as handy as anything when the whips are cracking. Arikira is liable to lose a lot of ground at the barrier and he is no boy's horse either. Retract won nicely twice recently and is a likely one at the burden. Spearful is getting ready for the New Zealand Cup, and if she is to win that, must run prominently in this. Stanchion, who has apparently again turned sour, cannot be relied upon to go away. Red Heckle is a likely one in the lightweights apd Gibraltar went very well without much luck at Wanganui. He can sea it out, as witness his St. Leger run at Ellerslie. Royal Artist h'as been a bit unlucky, but Cluny is a possibility in the lightweights. Pahu and Joie de Val are likely to be the outsiders. The field is very open and fancies may include: — • "

Red Heckle Gibraltar from — WELLINGTON HANDICAP, of £400; 1% miles: — Gay Crest, 9,10; Hunting Cry, 9.2; Fast Passage, 8.1; Arildra, 8.0; Retract, Spearful, 7.12; Stanchion, Red Heckle, 7.10; Gibraltar, 7.8; Merry Peel, 7.4; Royal Artist, 7.3; Pahu, 7.2; Cluny, 7.0; Joie de Val 7.0. $ * * Cadland has topweight in the Shorts and he can carry weight. View Halloo_ -is very well and 8.11 will" not stop him if he gets away. Great Star is very versatile, and Orapai should be in need of a race. Lord Val will wurthily represent Matamata, for he has been working well. Royal Routine won the other day and Tea Trader may ; do better than at Avondale. At the weights, Tradesman ' should hold him safe. Of the rest, Royal Bengal appeals most, the Whyte Memorial winner being fit now. The most likely seem to be: — View Halloo Lord Val Royal Bengal from — SHORTS HANDICAP, of £250; 6 furlongs: — Cadland, 9.8; View Haloo, Great Star, 8.11; Orapai, 8.9; Lord Val, 8.6; Royal Routine, 8.1; Arrow Lad> Tea Trader, 8.O.; Tradesman,' Quitant, High Comedy, 7.12; Rational II., 7.9; Royal Bengal, 7.6; White Fang, 7.2; Trojan Melody, 7.0. They are an average lot in the Oetober handicap and several have done a bit of running. The Tiger, Hurling- j ham, Kerbside, Woodful, Posy, Purse, I Aroma and Copper King will all have ] followers. Perhaps the best may be: j Hurlingham Woodful Copper Kin^ from — OCTOBER HACK HANDICAP, of £160; 6 furlongs: — The Tiger, 9.9, Hurlingham, The Quorn, 8.12; Kerbside, 8.9; Normandy, 8.7; Hunter's j Moon, Woodful, 8.1; Cottesmore, I 7.10; Grand Review, Posy, 7.6; j Aroma, Purse. 7.5 ; Copper King, 7.2; ' Dignified March, Golden Horn, Late Jest, Little Thrush, 7.0. * * * j The two-year-old classic, the Wel- ! lesley Stakes, has attracted a fine lot ; of youngsters and many have winning form. Amongst these are Princess Doreen, Gay Sheila, Midian, Gypsy Love, Gifirantee, Southdown. These include an Avondale Stakes winner and" a McLean Stakes victor, and the form is good. Placed horses include Silvox, Star Artist, Dinelli, with Quietly, Wait and See, Epigram and Pegged Exchange. It is very open, with preferences for: — ■ Princess Doreen Guarantee Gay Sheila WELLESLEY STAKES, of £400; 5 furlongs. — Rereatu, Midian, Pegged Exchange, Silvox, Senior, Southdown, Guarantee, Epigram, Delightment colt. 8.7 ; Red Manfrea, Widden, Hint, 8.4; Pelagia, Fracas, Gad Sheila, Lady Nan, Gipsy Love, Quietly, Star Artist, Wr.it ar.d See, Princess Doreen, Dinelli, 8.2. The acceptances and selections for the second day will appear on Monday morning.
