Rotorua Will Benefit - Excellent Christmas trading is anticipated for Rotorua shoplceepers this year owing to the deeision of Auckland business people to elose their premises on Christmas Eve, Saturday, at the usual time at xnidday. The long shopping night in Auckland will be held on Friday and it is expected that by Saturday evening many Auckland visitors will have arrived in Rotorua, where the h'oliday season shopping will be in full swing. License For Sporting Dogs Strong exception to the action of the Rotorua County Couxxcil in supporting an increased licensing fee for sporting dogs was taken by the executive of the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club at a meeting this week. It was deeided immediately to take the xnatter up with the H.Z. Kennel Club, aiid the council of the N.Z. Aeclimatisation Society, which will be asked strongly to oppose any increase in the license fee. Swimmmg Carnival The Rotorua Swinxxxiing Cluh has received adviee that the South Aueklaxxd centre of the New Zealand Swixnming Association has authorised the club to hold its first carnival in the Blue Baths at a date to be arranged. The carnival will probahly be held shortly and arrangements in connection with' the programme are well in hand.

Trampers Active During the weelc-end two tramps will be undertaken hy xnembers of the Rotorua Tramping Club. The first will oecupy two days and will he via the 33 mile peg to Tarawera and return, while on Sunday anothex* party will walk to the Blue axxd Green lakes. returning the same evening. Extex-mination of Shags Shags are stated to be rapidly increasing in numhers in the Rotorua district and the executive of the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club has deeided to make strong representations to the Government to increase the royalty payment for shags' feet, in order to aid in the extermination of the pest. The royalty, some time ago, was reduced from 2/6 to 1/- and it was deeided to request the authorities to revert to the former amount. It was pointed out, at a meeting of the executive held this week, that the present royalty is not sufficient to make it wox*th while fox* men to spand time anu ammunition destroying shags.

A Keen Meeting About 50 members and intending xxxembers were present at a general meeting* of the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cyclixxg Club last evening. After the positioxx relating to the cyclists — which had caused an adjoux*nment of the first annual meeting — had been satisfactorily dealt with, the election of officers and other general business was proceeded with. Championship cexbificates were also presented by the x*etiring president, Mr. D. Gambie. A full report will be published later. Okene Fishing Restrictions As a result of representations hy the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club, the minimum for fish taken during the coming angling season has been inceased from 9in to 12in. The club has also been successful on having the restrictions removed upon fishing at the Okere outlet. Previously anglers were permitted to moor a hoat only to one side of the streanx ahove the wharf, hut this restx*ictioix has now been eancelled. The oixly reixxaining restriction in this area is that v.hich prohibits the xxxooring of a hoat between the north end of the whax*f and the rapids. This restriction has been ixnposed by the Marine Departnxent purely as a safety xneasux'e.
