CUTTING IT FINE
AMERICAN GIRLS HAVE BUSY TIME CATCHING LINER. Two Canadian girls ended their holiday in Europe by making a dramatie dash by aeroplanes, motor car, and ship's tug, from Holland to Southampton, to catch the Canadian Pacifie liner nimpress of Australia, in which they had booked their passages home. The girls, Miss P. Virtue and Miss E. Hurd, ooth of Montreal, were staying at Haarlem, Holland, with friends, who persuaded them to remain until the last minute. They eventually boarded an aeroplane at Amsterdam to fly to Croydon, which they hoped to reach in time to catch the boat train at Waterloo. Thiek fog over the coast of Holland forced the aeroplane to land at Rotterdam until it cleared. When it reached Croydon the girls found that they had missed the boat train. Not to be daunted, they chartered a special aeroplane and flew to Hamble Aerodrome, near Southampton, where they transferred to a motor car and raced to the dock. It was found, however, that the Empress of Australia had left her berth several minutes before the girls arrived. Officials recalled a tug which was escorting the liner, and, aftsr a short chase, the two girls were put safely aboard.
