THE COROMANDEL STRIKE
Discussing the gold strike on the. Coromandel the Thames Star says : — "On Saturday another 41b of specimen ore, containing gold estimated to weigh an ounce, was brought into ! Coromandel by Mr. Chapman, jnr., I and was lodged in the hanli to-day. ' If the gold is anything like the average quality of gold obtained from the Coromandel region it should assay out at approximately 70 per cent. pure, the remaining 30 per cent. being silver. Pure gold is at present worth about £5 19s lOd an ounce and all bullion won from Coromandel since Britain departed from the. gold standard brings approximately £4 or over. Mining experts are of the opinion that the bullion now being talcen from the Chapman workings should bring £4 10s at the bank."
