RECENT RIOTS
PROMPT AND VALUABLE HELP ACCORDED POLICE. Reference to the recent civil disturbances in New Zealand is made by the Commissioner of Police (Mr W. G. Wohlmann) in his report on the Police Force of the Dominion, which has been presented to Parliament. . "Seeking relief, many unemployed, iparticularly in the larger cities, gathered in large numbers," he states. "Incited hy a relatively small hut ac(tive group of malcontents, riotous conduct was precipitated, resulting in damage to property and loss of trade to the business community. The police were required to use force to disperse the riotous element, many of whom were arrested and duly punished. This exhibition of lawlessness and challenge to the forees of law and order by an ill-advised section produced an immediate answer prompt and unmistakahle from the mass of the citizens, who evinced their determination to check any attempt at mob law hy furnishing further reserves of power hehind the civil police as circumstances required. This prompt and highlyvalued help quickly changed the situation, which very soon returned to normal condition." •
