NEW BRITISH CARS
RABjlCAL DEPAKTURES IN TRANSMISSION SYSTEM. ANTI-VIBRATION FEATURES. London, October 3. A five-mile pageant of new British cars, ranging in price from £100 to £6500, with engines from eight to 70 horse-power and from foo(r to 1% cylinders, will be shown at the Motor Exhibition opening at Olympia on October 13. Practically every maker is showing new designs. Most models possess four forward gears, while the new economy cars are miniatures of the higher-powered models. Owing to the completeness of the coachwork equipment and other improvements, especially the development of motor metallurgy resulting in smoother running and prolonged durability, the claim is made that the light cars are capable of a mileage of at least 2000 to the gallon of oil, with a corresponding reduction in fuel consumption. The majority of the cars are fitted with a new type of transmission, including a variety of devices for automatic gear-changing and clutch releases — hydraulic clutches, automatie and synchronising gear-boxas and free wheeling and anti-stalling devices. An important feature is the general adoption of anti-vibration rubber mountings for the engine on the chassis, enabling the adoption of strongsr braced chassis, which permit the car to withstand rougher usage. There are also many devices for safer driving, the principal being an adjustable shock-absorber to suit a varying load. It is operated by the driver without leaving his seat. Numerous mechanical illuminated signalling installations and structural improvements include a bulkhead dividing the bonnet and the driving quarter. The bodywork generally is roomier, with more headspace, and notable attempts have been made to suppress fumes and lmprove silenoers. A big section for motor boats of all sizes features an increase in highspeed Diesel engines.
