HOMICIDE CHARGE GRAYE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST AUCKLAND MEDICAL MAN DEATH OF INFANT

Auckland, Tuesday. The charge of committing homicide was amended to one of mnrder, when George Frederick Hewer, aged 89 years, described as a doctor, appeared in the Police Court. -Hewer was charg■ed with killing an infant hy ■ an unlawful act on o'r about October 3, and • with the unlawful use of an instrument on September 25. The inquest concerning the death of "the infant was also comme'nced with the hearing of the case. The ' results pf a postmortem exainination 6f the body of a male child, were described hy Dr. D. N. W. Murray, who said that there w:ere no external marks of violence on the hody' of the child. The child had breathed and had lived for some little ,time, wjtness said. There was no disease present to pr.eyent the , child from living had it been born at the full time. Immature birth had lessened its chances of living. The mother of the yo.ung woman involved in the case, stated that she visited accuaed at his rooms in the city on the morning of September 21, and described her daughter's condition to Hewer. Witness said that Hewer very reluctan^ to take the girl. Witness paid a second visit to accused on the following Friday, her daughter then accompanying her. Hewer said the price for the operation wo,uld be £20. Witness said sh'e •could not pay .that amount, and Hewer agr.eed to an offer of £10. Her daughter called again later in ihe day. The hearing was adjourned.
