MAJESTIC

TO-DAY AND TO-NIGHT. Warner Baxter's well-known ability to portray with utmost realism any sort of characterisation was again demonstrated t the delight of audienees at the Majestic Theatre last night, where "Amateur Daddy," Fox drama with Marian Nixon paired opposite the wa\1y-haired, soft-vdiced star, opened its engagement. In this heart-stirring photoplay, Baxter returns to his most universal-ly-liked role, that of an average American. Miss Nixon, too, is seen in the wistful, emotional sort of role in which the publie loves* her best. Together, they make a romantic team of believable sincerity. Briefly, the plot of "Amateur Daddy" revolves about the expreiences of a shy bachelor who takes over the care of a family of waifs when an accident rohs them of their father. Although he makes a mistake in families, through a logical mix-up of two Smith families living in the same town, the children he adopts are truly in need of assistance, so this minor point is easily forgotten, especially when it is learned that the oldest daughter, played hy Miss Nixon, is. aware from the start that Baxter has adopted the wrong Smiths. Witnessing Miss Nixon's hrave fight to keep her younger brother and two baby sisters from becoming wards of the county, Baxter is inevitably drawn into romance with this strange young girl. Their amusing experiences with the children, and their desperate sturggle against the opposition of the neighbours, bring the plot to its stirling dramatic climax. An exceptionally strong supporting cast headed by Rita LaRoy, William Pawley and David Landau rounds out the excellency of the j'icture. Frankie Darro, Joan Breslaw, Gail Kornfeld, and Joe Hackey, as the four children, each contribute much to the entertainment qualities.
