SEIZED BY LION
ZOO VISITOR ATTACKED. Edgar Jackson, of Belvidere Road, Liverpool, was tecently admitted to a j nursing-home suffering from injuries inflictad by a lion while he was visiting the new Liverpool Zoo. The lion, ■which is named Nero, fatally injured Captain Tom Purchase at Manchester ' some time ago. Mr. Jackson was walking by th'e lion cage when the lion seized one bf his arms and drew it into the cage. Jackson was carrying a walkiiig-stiek, and, showing gi-eat presence of mind, he pushed the end bf it into one of the lions nostrils. This forced the ani- • mai to release its hold, and Jackson was able to withdraw his arm. He was taken to hosp-ital, where his inI juries were treated, and later h'e was J transferred to a -nursing-home. | Captain Purchase was in a cage with his 19-year-old uaughter Rose and two lions. He suspected that Nero, a young lion, which had been in the show only six months, intended ' to attaek the girl, and he put up his artificial leg to ward the animal off. The lion turned on him, pulled the leg off, gripped Captain Purchase by the neck, and bit his back and leg. Attendattts had to fight the lion with poles. Captain Purchase died in hospital.
