ROAD HONING
The question of the best method of surface treatment for the removal of corrugations was raised at the last meeting of the Wellington City and Suburban Highways Board. It was suggestad that a contracting company possessed a secret formula which was unlcnown to Mr. G. A. Hart, city engineer. The question was raised by a letter from the company, which' has just completed a length of "surface honing" (filling up the hollows and shaving off the filling to level out corrugations) on the Petone Esplanade, at a price of ls per square yard, offering to complete the job at ls 4d per .square yaru. The city engineer recommended against letting a contract. The work, he said, could quite as well be done by the council staff at a price of Is .ld per yard, and that price would be further raduced if considerable areas were to be done. The eompany's price would work out at about £400, and his estimate was £325. The company had no special know- ' ledge, said Mr. Hart. The council omcers lcnew just as much about the proeess as they did and probably a great deal more. They could not teach the Main Highways Board much. Certainly the company had made a good job, but not any better than had the council, and though! he was inclined to think that the proeess would become the standard method of treating surfaces, in place of spraying, it had ; not been proved by time. When it was adopted "in a big way the cosfc might be brought down to lld per sq. yard. Corrugations were bound to develop on any surfaced road, and the proeess appeared to be the only way of renioving them.
