WHITE AUSTRALIA

GERMAN PROFESSOR THINKS INFLUX MUST BE EUROPEAN. Through heing a professor of Oriental languages at the University of Konigsberg, Germank, Dr. Helmuth von Glasenapp, who was a through passenger by the Monowai at Wellington, admits that he is interested in the subject of Asiatic immigration. On his way out to Australia recently he took the opportunity of visiting the Hindus at Fiji and the Japanese at Hawaii. But on his way back from a spell in Australia he spoke in the Dominion mainly on the subject of how Australia might stay "white." His conclusion is that European immigration would be inevitable. "It is of great importance for Australia," he said, "that she should raise her white population, because so long as the north of Australia has practically no white population there will always be the danger that Asiatic races will settle there. For that reason the only way for Australia if they do not want Asiatics in their • country will be to open their doors to European immigration. And then, of course, there are difficulties with labour. " "But I don't see any other way," he said, "because Asiatics — Hindus, Chinese and Japanese — are multiplying so much that in the long run they will be unahle to stay in their countries while the other half of the world remains empty. If Australia wants to remain white, the only way will be for it to attract European immigration. And' at pres'ent the most crowd- . ed countries in Europe are England, Germhny and Ifcaly. The Australian , population is increasing only by 2 per eent. each year. At that rate eenturies would elapse before the country was peopled."
