AVONDALE RACES

BONZE TRAY BRINGS OFF BIG SURPRISE INV CUP GREEK GOLD TAKES SPRINT (Special by "Canard") j I * j Avondale, Saturday. ' Eor the first time° on record for years, the Avondale Jockey Club had fine "weather for its spring meeting, which opened to-day, with the result that the public attende'd in large numbers. The cup provided the usual surprise Bronze Tray defeating the cracks to return a double figure dividend. Speculation was brisk, the tote handling £27,296, compared with £18,- 1 512 10s last year. An increase of £8783 10s. The meeting last year, however, was held in very unfavourable weather conditions. An inquiry into a complaint by Yoitre, rider of Delrain, against Pelting for erossing, was dismissed. ; Jonathan Wins First Division Getting the best of runs on the*' rails Jonathan had no diffi'eqlty in accounting for the opposition in the ' Maiden Plate (first division). The j win was the more meritorious since his rider had neither whip nor spurs. ' • Roxy, who bolted at the post, got the ; best of the start and led Good Run . and Eldora, with Landlubber and ' Jonathan in attendance. Turning for home, Eldora led Roxy, Lady Winifrede, Jonathan with Belltopper moving up on the outside. Jonathan came through to win by a lengfch ■ from Belltopper who was ridden all ; the way with Roxy third and Eldora . fourth. Then came Good Run, Mankill (who was blocked at the straight ' entrance) and Demylus. j Second Division The favourite, Delrain (£505 10s) : got a fly in the second division, but had to give it best to Pelting who drew out at the distance. to win narrowly. Delrain hopped out from Loombination, Pelting and Hunting March. When a couple of furlongs had gone Delrain and Hunting March were on terms ahead of Loombination, Beryl Latour and Pelting. Pelting came through to win from Delram with Loombination three. lengths back, third, followed by On Approval, Sweet Whispers, Kind Words and Master Musk. The time, 1.27 2-5 was good. Deadheat in High-weight It wouldn't be a genuine Avondale meeting unless "Bob" Lusk gave at least one dead heat and he got in early this time with being unable to separate Thespis (£1168 10s) and Tarporley (£607 10s). Thespis was backed as if the race was all over and his supporters only just got their money back. Chang (£146 10s) was first away, the start having been held up by fractious horses. Chang led Thespis, Biform, Tarporley, Advance Camp and Royal Survey out of the start, but round the back, Chang still was in command from Thespis with Biform and Tarporley on terms, followed by Royal Visitor making a move up. It was a good go in the straight Tarporley coming through to deadheat with Thespis, Chang getting third three-quarters of a length back, followed by Biform who will improve, Illuminagh, Neil and Royal Survey. The time, considering the weights, was excellent, being 2.10 2-5. Pillow Fight Hack Champion Running in Phar Lap's colours Pillow Fight, who goes to Australia shortly, fought out a ding dong finish with Sea Ruler in the Champion Hack Plate. Pillow Fight, Princess Bede, Midinette and Miss Lorraine were first out. When they had gone four furlongs the order was Pillow Fight and Princess Bede clear of Miss Lorraine, Midinette, Sea Ruler and L'Allegro with Psychologist next. In a stern finish Pillow Fight beat Sea Ruler by a neck with L'Allegro three lengths back. Then came Midinette Psychologist, Protomint, Princess Bede, Holly Lu, Knight of Australia. Puss Moth lost his position at the top and Prolyxo, who rnissed the jump-out tailed the field and was pulled up. The winner should have little difficulty in winning the Guineas on Monday. Came From Clouds Last year Little Doubt won the Avondale Cup and paid close on half a^century and this time, Bronze Tray came to light and upset the hot pots

paymg double figures. Curiously enough, his name was posted on the scratching board. Yalroe hopped out from Baroscope and Maori Boy, followed by Royal Artist and Hunting Cry. Maori Boy set a slow pace when he went to the front from Valr.oe and Baroscope with Hunting Cry and Royal Artist in attendance. At the straight, Maori Boy was still in front of Baroscope and Hunting Cry with Antique and Bronze Tray last. In the run home, Royal Artist f orged j to the front and looked like. a win- 1 ner at the distance, but Bronze Tray , came up under the flail on the outer I and won by one and a-quarter leng- 1 ths. Hunting Cry was third half a- i length back, followed by Maori Boy, j Baroscope, Antique (coming very j fast) , Gay Cockade and Limeen. The winner, on known form, was surpris- . ingly well backed, but as he is train- ■ ed in Whangarei, little is known in ' the centres of his condition. Princess Doreen Best Baby The public were well on the spot with their choices in the Stakes, Princess Doreen beating Gypsy Love with Star Artist third. One that had a bad run, but should be watched, was Impey's Gold Pocket which was badly left and then finished fourth. Barn Dance was away on her toes followed by Princess Doreen, Gypsy Love, Star Artist, Glenromney and Lady Diana. Princess Doreen took up the running to win and after the first four, came Bonnie Joyce, Gay Shiela, King Musk and Spiral. King Mesto fell. Greek Gold's Sprint Tea Trader was made a good favourite .jfor the Flying over Greek Gold, but the Impey three-year-old won convincingly. He got the best of the start at which Huntingdon, ridden by an apprentice, was slow to i find his feet. Greek Gold was eased and Lack took up the running from j Tradesman, Greek Gold, Gold Day, Tea Chat and Tea Trader. There was no change in order at the straight but Greek Gold beat Lack in the ruri

53 1 ■ 8a i u-m home with Tradesman two lengths away, third, followed by the favourite, Tea Trader, who could have been much better ridden, Gold Day (will take one soon), Huntingdon (finished very resolutely), Tetrachate and Tea Chat, Teels Scores at Last The f ull sister to the Auckland cup winner, Motere, Teels who has been backed and beaten until punters are sick of her, came to light in the Swanson mile and won from Bugle Call with Trishna third, and Currajong fourth. Claremore jumped sidewards at the start and skittled the favourite Arch Ruler, whilst along the back Hawthorn who was in a good position, fell and stopped Trishna. Catchem and Lady Lulu got the break but Teels soon took charge and was not headed. Teels led Great Emblem, Ruling King, Currajong and Master Brierly into the straight. The judge hoisted Trishna's number as third, but his slip gave Arch Ruler, which as a matter of fact did not finish in the first ten, nor did Trishna. Ruling King was really the horse. Ruling King was fifth, after which came Lady Lulu, Master Brierly, Claremore, Great Emblem and Glenrata. King's Archer Narrowly La Moderne and King's Archer were the fancies in the Henderson, and they finished in the reverse order. Alloy was in the lead for a furlong, but got a bad knock back and Pomp led Flying Prince, Gold Trail, La Moderne and King's Archer. In the run home King's Archer just got up to line La Moderne by a neck, j Pomp being a length back, third. Then came Gold Trail, Flying Prince, ■ Gay Idea and Chief Joy . | De tailed Results Detailed results were: — MAIDEN HANDICAP Of £120; 7 furlongs.
