CHILDREN'S BALL

SUCCESSFUL PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS DANCE A children's plain and fancy dress dance was"held in the Lyric Hall on Friday evening, the proeeeds going towards the cost of tennis courts, etc. at the school. The Grand March opened the programme, hut there were very f ew fancy dresses. Mr. W. Kihhlewhite (headmaster) made an exeellent M.C. throughout the evening. The primary children gave folk dances, some of them being the "Shoemaker," "Polonaise," "Haymaker," while the High School girls also gave some quick, rythmic folk dances. The Gaiety Orchestra, at its hest, supplied the music, which' was mostly time suited for polkas, barn dances, etc. Monte Carlos were won by Rita Baird and j-vobin McDairmid, Fay Reece and Jack Inskip. Balloons, which hung in bunches from the roof, were distrihuted to the children when they assembled in the supper hall which was' gaily decorated in coloured streamers. Before the adults took the floor at 10.30 p.m. Mr. E. Payne (ch'airman), on behalf of the school committee, expressed the hope that the younger folk had enjoyed themselves and that the older ones would enjoy themselves even better. He congratulated Mr. Kibblewhite and the teaching staff on the suceess of the function. He then called upon the Hon. J. B. Gow to say a few words. Mr. Gow, in doing so, expressed his great pleasure at being present and said that as he was looking on this assemblage of youth he knew he was looking on the hopes of New zealand. He also complimented the teaching staff and all who were connected with the entertainment. ■ He wished the children the happiest of times in their educational career. > Mr. Kihhlewhite, in thanking the Hon. J. B. Gow and Mr. E. Payne, said that it was not he, as headmaster, who deserved the praise, but the staff as a working body. He specially mentioned Miss B.
