AVONDALE MEETING

"Canard.")

CHANCE OF HUNTING CRY IN AVONDALE I CUP. | CHAMPION HACK OPEN. |

(Notes by

What amounts to the opening of the flat-raeing season as far as the general public of the Auckland province is concerned is held on Saturday and Monday and though the Avondale Club is by no manner of means the best-run club in the province, yet the racing is lilcely to be fairly interesting in view of future events. The course is not easy to get at and the appointments are not up to the standard of most of the country clubs. The club does not err on the side of generosity either in stakes oi* the treatment of the public. . First on the list is the Maiden Plate, with the usual collection of "roughies," and it is to be run in two divisions. So far the club has made no move to indicate whether it will be progressive enough to be the first in the province to stage three diwies. Tbere is not a great deal of form in the first division, but seconds have been run by Jonathan, Chateau, Landubber, Mahkill aud Wee Pat. Of these Jonathan was a good stamp of two-year-old and should be well. Landlubber nearly brought off a big coup at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Mahkill, from the Kemp stable, is quite useful. Chateau seems very unlucky. Belltopper is from Hector Gray's stable and might spring one. The form reads: — Jonathan Landlubber Mahkill from — MAIDEN PLATE of £100, Seven Furlongs. — First Division. Belltopper, Jonathan, Chateau, Sup. "Ruler, Shon Latour, Landlubber, Roxy, Good Run, Demylus, Master Musk, B. Columbia, 8.2; Traced, Wee Pat, L. Winifred, Charsong, Mahkill, Eldora, Spring Vale, 7.11. * * * * The second division sees placed h'orses in Loombination (.the field was woefully weak), Kanapa, Pelting, Booklaw (and his half-century diwie was a big surprise to the nine ticketholders). On Approval, Vilma and Blandford are not bad sorts, but have no form to go by as yet. Directory is useful, and Beryl Latour has been breaking watches at Te Awamutu. She is a half-sister to Karapoti, and also to Awarere. So far she has had eight starts last season and is still a maid'en. Delrain ran a good fourth in better company and might run well. They are a pretty paltry lot, the best reading: — Kanapa Pelting Delrain from — MAilDEN PLATE of £100, * Seven furlongs. — Second Division. Blandford, Sir Musk, Loombination, Directory, Kanapa, Golondrina, Pelting, Hunting March, Delrain, Booklaw, 8.2; Beryl Latour, Miss Rewa, On Approval, Courthaveta, Sweet Whisp'er, Vilma, Kink Words, 7.11. * * t- * There are no hurdle races for the public at Avondale, the Kingsland Flat giving jumpers a bit to earn oats with. Royal Survey is top with 10.11, and if in order should not find it too much. Tarporley, though a hard horse to keep right, should be capable of carrying this off, but might find Buckenham's Advance Camp in the picture. Neil, from Jimmie Buchanan's stable, is in good order, but Patutahi is very chancy in his ways. Royal Visitor was well enough in August, but has not done anything since. Thespis won a double at Ellerslie and is in light. Biform, from Paeroa, should go better than when he was racing on the flat before, whilst a newcomer to the game, Chang, is in under the hack condition. He hails from a good stable anu has been persevered with. Cat-i-mes has again changed owners and is evidently not worth holding on to. The race is fairly open, with preferences for. — Thespis Tarporley Neil from — KINGSLAND HIGH - WEIGHT HANDjlCAP, of £100; 11 miles. Royal Survey 10.11, Tarpurley 10.4, Advance Camp 10.0, Neil 10.0, Patutahi 9.13, Royal Visitor 9.13, Thespia 9.13, Biform 9.11, Illuminagh 9.1. Chang, 9.0, Cat-i-mes 9.0. * * * # There are some very useful sorts in the Champion Hack Plate, including the expensive Pillow Fight, but it is not certain that he will start, Psychologist is always close up over his distance, but may be held safe by Imamint. Royal Gallant is over his pet distance of seven, and what beats him will be blowing at the end. "Nudger" Cucksey thinks Princess Bede is well enough to take out, but Puss Moth should be able to make them all go fast. Protomint is too iffy at the post to be with regularly, but if well away might upset things. L'Allegro is always a trier and always dangerous over seven. Lower down come Sea Ruler, that brilliant filly Midinette, Miss Lorraine, Holly Lu, Prolyxo and Jonathan, who will probably start in the Maiden. Any of these' ' *>ve chances and the Plate is the most open for many years past. In a regular punters' puzzle, the awards may go to: — Royal Gallant Puss Moth Midinette from — CHAMPION HACK PLATE, of £300; special Weights; 7 furlongs: — Psychologist, Imamint, Royal Gallant, Princess Bede, Puss Moth, Protomint, L'Allegro, Knight of Australia, Lordly Knight, 8.9; Sea Ruler, Midinette, Miss Lorraine, Master Brierly, Holly Lu, Pillow Fight, Prolyxo, 7.12, Jonathan 7.5. * * * * • Antique heads the Cup list with 9.12, and that is more than enough at this stage of the season. The Lord alone knows why he was paid up for. Hunting Cry, after his win at Napier Park, must be tough, for he is able to carry a ton„and go smoothly. Val-

roe is working nioely at Matamata, but may not be quite ready yet. Te Hoia is not bad and Paddon, after his run of hurdling, should be fit. Royal Artist is going strong, as ^ is Baroscope, wh'o will be bracketed with Flying Prince. Of the others, Catoma, Limeen and the True Blood — Top'light bracket may do better than the rest. There is not much real form to go by, but the tote may indicate: — • Hunting Cry Cucksey's Elect Paddon from — AVONDALE CUP HANDICAP, of £350; li miles: Antique 9.12, Hunting Cry 9.7, Valroe 8.3, Sargon 8.3, Te Hoia 8.1, Paddon 7.10, Royal Artist 7.10, Baroscope 7.8, Gay Cockade 7.7, Maori Boy, Limeen, Bronze Tray, Catoma, True Blood, Toplight, -7.0. * * * * The Avondale Stakes sees about a score of babies, most of whom have never sperted silk before, due to parade. Impasto, Pelagia, Bon Rapide and Boudoir have droppea out at the time of- writing, and the selection of lilcely horses is practically a matter of guesswork, since "Canard" has not had the chance of seeing any two-year-old track work, as is the privilege of most sporting writers. However, Glenromney has been going well. : Enjoyment went a good gallop the other day. Lady Diana is not bad (she hails -from Tirau), Gipsy Love won, at Hawke's Bay. Princess Doreen has two wins to her credit, whilst Dinelli has a second and a third. What form there is points to: — Princess Doneen Dinelli Enjoyment from — • AVONDALE STAKES, of £300; two-year-olds; colts and geldings 8.0, fillies 7.9; five furlongs: Spiral, Glenromney, King Mestor, King Musk, Barn Dance, Hunting Melody, Impasto Enjoyment, Solomon, Gold Pocket, King Aara, 8.0; Springtime, Diacque-nod-Walce Up f, Pelagia 7.9, Lady Diana,, Gay Sheila, Expectancy, Gipsy Love, 'Gay Rose, Bonny Gay, Bon Rapide, Corinus, Star Artist, Princess Doreen, Dinelli, Boudoir, 7.9. * * * * The field is quite classy in the Flying, and it is natural that the dual Railway winner, Hunting Cry, should have top impost here. However, all indications are that the Hunting Song gelding will take on the longer journey, mostly in preparation for later events. From the Gray stable comes Huntingdon, a half-brother, and he is scorching the tracks at Takanini. He should be hard and with age on him should carry his 8.10. Tea Trader was a brilliant two-year-old and, by the way, has a distinct preference for the Avondale track, having run some of his best races there. High Comedy has never quite upheld her early promise, but as she is now a four-year-old, may do bettet. Emmett Pope can get them right. Tradesman would would be more fancied if the sting were out of the ground and more still if it were hock-deep. Gold Day is making a reappearance but has never seemed quite the sarne horse since his Australian visit. Tea Chat will make things interesting if fit, and will be coupled with High Comedy. Mareehal won at this meeting last year to givs Geo. Paul the first of a nice trot. If fit he is a good sprinter, of whom the best has not yet been seen. Lack and Greelc Gold were both firstclas;s of two-year-olds and of the two Lack may be more fancied. Tetrachate is usually a surprise and is working well. Probably public support will veer in favour of: — Huntingdon Lack Tea-Trade-High Comedy .. ..bracket. from — FLYING STAKES HANDICAP, of £175; six furlongs: Hunting Cry 9.5, Huntingdon 8.10, Tea Trader 8.3, High Comedy 8.1, ^Tradesman 8.1, Gold Day 7.12, Tea Chat 7.9, Marechal 7.9, Lack 7.9, King's Archer 7.1, Soloist 7.1, Greek Gold 7.1, Tetrarchats 7.0. * sfc Jack Docherty says that Great Emblem will make them all stretch out in the Swanson Mile, and he usually is not far out, for, though the Emblematic — Tarillian five-year-old has not had the colours up for a while, he is a good 'un. Imamint is in the Champion Hack and is sure to give that a fly. Trishna is another of Geo. Paul's which impressed at seven furlongs and may be hard here. Arch Ruler bobs up now and again and according to report is sticking to work. The steeplechaser Claremore is just in the right nick to earn some of the hundreds Mrs. McGregor Grant paid for him. Hawthorn is a solid stayer and in addition is well. Master Brierly went well 'enough in a seven last year as a baby, whilst Glenrata won a seven in good time. Currajong is a white feather artist. Teels the full sister to Motere, is always going to, but never does. Probably the hard ones are Hawthorn Trishna Arch Ruler from — SWANSON HANDICAP, of £100; one mile: Great Emblem 9.10, Imamint 9.10, Trishna 8.13, Arch Ruler >8.12, Claremore 8.8, Hawthorn 8.6, Master Brierly 8.4, Glenrata 8.2, Currajong 8.0, Teels 7.9, Bugle Call 7.7, Lady Lulu 7.7, Ruling King 7.7, Catch 'Em 7.7. * * * * The end of the first day comes with the Henderson which' invariably provides an upset of form. This year does not seem likely to vary the run, either. The field is exceptionally good and well handicapped. Volimond is pleasing Alec Swney, and may surprise for all her weight. High Comedy is engaged earlier, whilst Chief Joy, if the going is good, must have a good show. Probably Sp'eedmint would have more support over a middle distance, as she is a slow beginner, and the same applies to La Moderne, though she is so well that she must be considered. Pomp is apparently sound again, but will find it hard to stay with Imperial Prince and King's Archer. Vandyke, with Simpson in the saddle, is a real track-burner. Of the bottom weights, Hampton Park and Alloy appeal most, the public choice possibly being: — Vandyke Chief Joy •' Imperial Prince from — HENDERSON HANDICAP, of £125; seven furlongs: Volimond 9.3, High Comedy 8.5, Chief Joy 8.4, Speed-

mint 8.0, La Moderne 7.13, Pomp 7.7, Gold Trail 7.7, Imperial Prince 7.7, King's Archer 7.5, Van Dyke 7.4, Eager Rose 7.4, Flying Prince, Gay Idea, Whakapara, Werata, Hampton Park, Helium, Alloy, 7.0. The seleetions for the second day, Monday, will appear that morning.
