FRICE OF PETROL GOVT. WILL WATCH POSITION CLOSELY SAYS MR. FORBES QUESTION IN HP.USE
Wellington, Friday. A firni attitude in regard to possible attempts at a petrol Monopoly was taken in the xxouse by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. G.- W. Fotibes) when replying to a question from Mr. P*. Fraser (Wellington Central). Mr. Fraser asked if th'e Government was taking any action to contrbl the priee of petrol. He pointed out that the price had been reeently raised by agreement in New York. "I can assure the House," replied Mr. Forbes, "that the position regarding oil supplies is one on which. the Government will keep a elosb eye. Anything in the nature of a world-wide monopoly would be dlfficult to comhat hut we are not goihg to see New Zealand exploited if it caii possihly be helped. "It is a difficult matter, but if we reach the' stage of being at the mercy of a comhine, the Government will do everything it possibly can to prevent it from operating in New Zealand. You can rely on that."
